Rallying the Troops |
Many municipal parking divisions live with a dearth of old parking meters, decades past their useful life, on the verge of being out of service more often than operational. Right along with them are customers who complain about needing to carry change, or who come in angry after receiving a citation when they took a chance because they didn't have enough coins. It's time to upgrade! So the City of Tampa did. Our parking operations division installed 146 multi-space pay stations to serve more than 1,000 parking spaces, representing approximately two-thirds of our on-street inventory. I won't bore you with the details of the effort it took to get to the upgrade, but in summary, it took more than two years, two RFPs, and a significant amount of hair loss by a certain parking executive (not me, of course). Despite the costs, we now look back at the effort as a success. How did we do it? How can you? Parking Matters® to Municipalities such as Oakland, San Francisco, San Mateo, Walnut Creek, Union City, Vallejo, and Riverside... |
What if city officials appreciated the importance of parking--and parking professionals? Thanks to the second annual Parking Matters® breakfast seminar for non-parking professionals held in conjunction with CPPA's conference in Oakland last week, more do! Nearly 40 such officials were on hand for a program that covered topics ranging from technology and sustainability (presented by Brandy Stanley, CAPP and Thomas Wunk, CAPP), to closing the gap between paper regulations and real-life parking operations (Mott Smith), to parking politics, pitfalls, and progress (Robert Horch). Jointly hosting the event were CPPA President Marlene Cramer and IPI Board Member Wanda Brown. Hats off to our California members for advancing the parking profession at this event, and also at the California Downtown Association, where IPI Parking Matters® committee member Chad Lynn adapted an IPI presentation to help enlighten downtown officials about the critical role parking plays in a successful downtown. Coming soon...the first in a series of educational guides on parking for non-parking professionals, that will focus on local government officials and municipalities. Stay tuned!

Show Me the Money! Using Technology to Track Your Revenue from the Meter to the Bank |

IPI's Next Webinar
Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. EST
Instructor: Darlene Pfeiffer, CAPP, M.P.A., financial administrator, City of Fort Lauderdale Department of Transportation and Mobility
Participants in this webinar will learn how to use current technologies to track their parking, permit and citation revenue, ensuring it can be accounted for from the customer's hand to the bank. We'll look at internal controls, possible points of "leakage," and some best practices to minimize opportunities for fraud, theft, and error. Every dollar counts in today's tight squeeze for revenue.
The webinar will answer these questions:
- What are internal controls and why do I need them?
- What are some examples of internal controls? Are they painful?
- I trust my staff, why should I bother with this?
- I'm not a tech geek and have a limited budget...what technologies do I already have that can help me track my revenue without needing an IT degree?
- How can this make my operation more efficient and effective?
This webinar is useful for parking-related field operations, management, and accounting staff of municipalities, universities, and private operators.
