New! IPI Introduces On-Demand Learning |
Few people come to the parking industry with insider knowledge of how things really work. On-the-job training can teach them about their own jobs and companies, but not everyone has the time or budget to attend the industry classes that can make the difference between company worker and parking professional. IPI has a solution for that!
IPI pleased to introduce our new On-Demand Learning program -- Training Without Travel -- offering parking-specific courses that can be completed from any internet-connected computer, on any schedule, by any employee.
Developed by some of the industry's most respected and well-known leaders, these training modules are presented in an easy-to-follow online format that includes a brief quiz at the end of each. Individuals can progress through the modules as their schedules permit and earn a certificate of completion for each course they successfully complete. Currently available courses include:
- Customer Service
- Conflict Resolution
- Parking Enforcement: On- & Off-Street
- On-Street Parking Management
- Parking Technology - Trends & Traffic Management
IPI will continually add new courses to its On-Demand Learning program to help you and your staff advance through the parking profession.

Parking Management and Pricing in the United States - a San Francisco Treat! |
IPI Executive Director Shawn Conrad, CAE, and a number of IPI municipal members attended the invitation-only Parking Management and Pricing in the United States workshop September 22-23 in San Francisco, Calif., which focused on new developments in parking pricing, parking policy, and technology. The workshop, co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration and the National Association of City Transportation Officials, brought together thought leaders with backgrounds in planning, policy, and parking. A primary focus of the workshop centered around the federally funded pilot project, SFpark, a project of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority (SFMTA). For more information about the workshop and SFpark go to:
http://sfpark.org/about-the-project The SFMTA has created a book summarizing SFpark implementation and lessons learned as of August 2011, just after the first rate adjustment. This book is a resource to those studying parking policy as well as cities considering new parking policy and technology.

Proposed ADA Guidelines for Public Rights-of-Way |
By: Mary Smith, Senior Vice President, Walker Parking Consultants
On July 26, 2011, the Access Board issued revised proposed guidelines for accessibility in public rights-of-way. These guidelines have been issued several times since a first draft was issued in 1992. These would appear to be close to being final, having been reviewed and commented on by the public multiple times. Still, there is an opportunity to comment on the guidelines. Comments are due to the Access Board by November 23, 2011. We are excerpting the parking requirements from the document to help parking professionals understand the requirements for on-street parking and decide if they think they may want to submit comments. In addition, after the summary of the critical things for parking, we are including some background information, which if nothing else, will serve as a refresher! This is by no means a full and complete summary much less discussion of the requirements. It is provided for the convenience of the reader and no warranty is expressed or implied.
