IPI and ACT Conference - Enlightening!

ACT/IPI logoOn August 31, nearly 100 parking and transportation professionals recently met at the Summit on Parking-The Missing Link in Effective TDM for a full day of training and discussions on why parking and transportation demand management (TDM) expertise is key to a thriving urban landscape. The one-day conference held in Chicago was part of a continued collaboration between the International Parking Institute (IPI) and the Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT).

Seminars throughout the conference stressed the important role parking and transportation professional play in land management, access and mobility management, congestion reduction, and the many synergies between parking and TDM.  Presenters addressed a wide range of strategies for putting theory into practice and supporting the shared goals of parking and TDM professionals. Twelve suppliers took advantage of the opportunity to reach another segment of the industry. Participating exhibitors included; Timothy Haahs & Associates, Pango Shynny, Designa, Next Parking LLC, Standard Parking, ECO Parking Lights, Six Card Solutions USA, Genetec, Automated Parking Technologies/Digital Payment Technologies, Streetline Inc., Parkmobile USA, and Total Parking Solutions.

A wealth of information was shared and the two associations are very grateful to the following speakers who shared their expertise. The key speakers for the event included: Josh Kavanagh, CAPP, MBA, director of transportation, University of Washington; Casey Jones, CAPP, MPA, director of transportation & Parking, Boise State University; James M. Zullo, CAPP, LEED AP, vice president, Timothy Haahs & Associates, Inc.;  Hal King, executive director, Springfield Parking Authority; and Chuck Reedstrom, CAPP, senior practice builder, Kimley-Horn & Associates, Inc.

Member Benefit Corner: Certified Administrator of Public Parking (CAPP)

Developed by the International Parking Institute and administered in partnership with the University of Virginia, the CAPP Program is designed to provide continuous information and training to parking and transportation professionals, increase the body of knowledge, and establish a benchmark of excellence for the industry.  It also provide a means by which parking and transportation professionals may demonstrate their proficiency and be recognized by their peers.

"The CAPP Program brings parking and transportation practitioners from all levels together as students, learning and sharing their experiences and knowledge. The program is led by established professionals from many of the disciplines involved in parking planning, finance, design, construction, and operations. These lessons are combined with instruction from University of Virginia professors experienced in teaching business and management operations and organization. The participants work together in an atmosphere of personal development to improve their skills and knowledge, then focus on applying these to the parking industry. The program stimulates networking not only with classmates and instructors but also with colleagues who have already completed the program. The CAPP certification denotes a commitment to developing parking and transportation as professions dedicated to customer service with integrity. This certification is a significant accomplishment in my 30+ year career in parking and public safety." stated John Nolte, CAPP, Carl Walker, Inc.
