IPI's Amnesty Webinar Offered Insider Information

e-learning logoIPI's July 27th webinar, The Secrets to Hartford's Successful Parking Ticket Amnesty Program, Carey Redd, CAPP, educated participants on how the City of Hartford and the Hartford Parking Authority conducted an amnesty program that generated revenue 185 percent of forecast.

Carey also fielded questions during the webinar such as:
Question: How did you get permission from your DMV to publish the drivers' info? That's really a GREAT idea.

Carey Redd, CAPP
: In 2005 prior to the HPA taking over the City of Hartford's On-Street Parking Enforcement operations, I met with the then ST of CT DMV Commissioner and his staff at which time we consummated a working relationship. As a result of that effort, we speak to the DMV staff often enough to have acquired their respect, support, and active participation on any initiative we initiate. Therefore, the request to put motorist names on our web-site was approved by the DMV because we were performing a revenue collection. To be clear, we also asked to place the names in the newspaper which the DMV declined.

IPI members can read the entire Q&A from the webinar and see samples of materials the City of Hartford used, or anyone can access the archived webinar.

Preventing a Pain in the Glass

By Mark Wright

Picture a red-smeared tile floor covered in broken shards of glass. Then, imagine me, sitting in the middle of it all, yelling like a two-year-old. It's not a pretty picture.

A driver pulled into a parking space in front of the convenience store I was about to walk out of, but her car didn't stop. It popped right over the shallow car stop and equally shallow curb that separated the parking area from the store's windows and glass doors, and then crashed into me at the moment I was pushing those doors open to leave.

That 2008 event changed my view of parking spaces and the vehicles they're supposed to contain. Now, when I see a row of parking spots in front of a building, my attitude is best expressed by a line from the late Allen Funt's "Candid Camera" television show sign-off : "Don't be surprised if sometime, somewhere, someplace when you least expect it...!"
