IPI Meets with TSA Administrator to Review Parking's Role in Anti-Terrorism Efforts

TSA Administrator John Pistole

IPI Executive Director Shawn Conrad, CAE, and Deputy Director Henry Wallmeyer met with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Administrator John Pistole and other TSA officials to update them on the success of IPI's First Observer training program. Since its introduction at the 2010 IPI Conference & Expo, nearly 100 training classes have been conducted and almost 5,000 people and have been trained in this parking-specific, anti-terrorism program. Thanks to this specialized training, parking professionals made numerous surveillance reports to the First Observer call center, and information was subsequently forwarded to the Information Sharing Analysis Center (ISCA) for review. For more information about First Observer or to have this free training presented at your location for your employees, visit www.parking.org/firstobserver or contact Henry Wallmeyer at 540.371.7535.

Parking Matters:  Spotlight on Parking in Real Estate Law and Industry Report
Helping reporters "see the light" about the value of parking professionals is an important goal of IPI's Parking Matters program. A reporter's query on an obscure parking zoning law recently turned into a 3-page industry spotlight on parking in the Real Estate Law and Industry Report. Three cheers to Dennis Burns, CAPP, of Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., Phoenix, Ariz. who helped answer the original question, giving us the opportunity to turn a little story into a feature that makes the case for how "building parking systems, properly designed, can save developers millions." Among the messages that come across loud and clear: developers and property managers can benefit from an objective parking audit; there are numerous technological and management innovations in parking systems and programs that can improve customer service and return on investment; and parking expertise in the planning of transit-oriented development is good for business and can enhance project sustainability goals. Call Center Operations for Pay-In-Lane/Pay-on-Foot Stations: Providing Good Customer Service in the Age of Technology
Dennis R. Garrett, City of Greenville, S.C.

In our ever-changing world of technology-driven parking equipment, we as parking administrators, owners, operators, and management are looking at ways to not only reduce operating costs, but to do so without sacrificing customer service.

Many companies are considering converting their operations to pay-in-lane or pay-on-foot systems to reduce personnel costs, which equate to 30 percent or more of our daily operating expenses. While these systems do save costs, a concerted effort must be made to maintain a high level of customer service with transient patrons.
