2012 marks my 40th year in clay. My first stoneware wood firing was in 1975 at East Carolina University while working on my MFA in Ceramics.

I am a "functional" potter... both aesthetic and utilitarian since all things have a function.  I take my work seriously, but myself not so much.  Ultimately I make things for fun. There is a good deal of whimsy in what I do as well.

We built the initial kiln at Pumpkin Creek in 2007.   What started as a 40 cubic foot fast fire kiln has grown into a 100 cubic foot two chamber kiln.  We get our wood for fuel from trees downed by hurricanes, area tree trimmers, old pallets, construction scraps, even dunnage from the state port.

Why fire with wood?   Here are my top reasons
:

1. Fun... Way too much fun

2. Good exercise from splitting and hauling wood

3. The gathering of potters and friends for the firings

4. Crackling of the fire as fuel is added

5. "OOHS" and "AAHS" four to five times per year

6. Getting ready to do it again, as exciting as the first time !

Did you know.....?

  • Functional pottery  is dishwasher and microwave safe.
  • For oven use, both pottery and food should be at room temp, then placed in cold oven to heat gradually.
  • No lead is used in our glazes.
