Why People Fail
Bill Glazer's New Book
Greetings!

I just had the great opportunity to spend time with George Foreman while at a seminar in Atlanta. He was very entertaining, an inspiration and a real nice man. He is the ultimate rags to riches story. He said "When growing up we was so "po" we couldn't afford the "or". When asked why he named all his sons George he said: "If you were hit in the head as many times as I was, you would want to only remember one name." He said he didn't want to fight Joe Fraizer because he heard that if you missed him he got mad and if you hit him he liked it.

Everyone knows the George Forman Grill. He has sold over 120 million but for you youngins, did you know that he was twice the Boxing Heavy Weight Champion of the world. That's quite a feat.

Here's what a lot of people forget. ten years after he became the Heavy Weight Champion of the world and after not boxing for ten years, he was dead broke with no money to feed his family. He had nothing. To keep his kids from starving, he decided to go back and do what he knows best ... BOXING.

A lot of people laughed at him, made fun of him, and worst of all, the networks had no interest in even taking his calls. So he was frustrated and rejected, but he didn't give up.
He decided to prove them all wrong. He said his wife would dive him ten miles away from home and drop him off with only a stick of gum. He trained like a mad man, worked out, ran, and did what a younger fighter would do to reach his potential. What did it get him?
Well at age 45, George Foreman became the oldest Heavy Weight Champion in the world - EVER.

George said he was most proud of being married for 25 years and his 10 children. Once he had attained his goal of becoming the heavyweight champion of the world, he stepped up to the plate again and went after his next goal. He went on to sell over 120 million George Foreman Grills all over the world.

Some of the things that he shared that stuck with me was,
  1. You are never too old to start over.
  2. You need to learn to sell yourself.
  3. People don't buy what's in your hands they are buying you.
  4. Never be ashamed to sell yourself.
  5. He quoted Mary Kay: "Learn to sell and you'll never starve"
  6. Don't be scared, be hungry.
  7. Learn something new everyday.
  8. Get advice from others.
  9. Get up early.

Those are just some of the tidbits he offered. If you ever get the chance to meet George Foreman, make sure you do it. It could change your life and the way you look at life in general.

This is the time of year to be scheduling your advertising and promotions for 2010. If you don't plan now it will not get done! Those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Just think about it. Did you think it would be December already?

Make it easy for customers to buy gift certificates from you.
gift certificate Click on picture for better view.

I got this idea from Amy Baughman from Beaver Falls, PA and put my "twist" on it. It is aimed at the husband or anyone who doesn't know what to buy his wife or friend. The idea it to make it easy for them to purchase a gift certificate from you. There even was a link for them to pay for it on line. Again, the idea it to make it as easy on the customer to buy from you. Call, come in or buy on line. Here is what I said in the email:

This year we are offering a Concierge Gift Card Service. All you have to do is Click Here to download a Gift Certificate to print out. Then call any store, phone numbers to the left, and they will give you a validation code for what ever amount you want and it never expires. You can also Click Here to purchase a $100 Certificate. We will email you the validation code. It's just that simple. You don't even have to come into the store. If you prefer, we can send the Gift Certificate out with a special personalized card just from you.

This is great for you to give to a fellow sewer or as a "drop the hint" to someone who just doesn't know what to buy you. To them, you have everything but you know exactly what you want!

It is working very well and we have sold $2,200.00 worth of gift certificates in less than a week.

There are some new laws regarding gift certificates so check it out in your state first.

Will "The Secret Millionaire" Arrive At Your Door?
Not If You're Sitting Around Waiting For Him

A new TV program, loosely swiped from a TV show of long ago, debuts tonight on Fox. As I understand it, in "The Secret Millionaire" we will see millionaires go undercover, work for a week in some poorly paid job and live as the oppressed workers and economically troubled live. The millionaires will find one of the downtrodden they meet especially worthy and, revealing themselves as "secret millionaires," will whip out their checkbooks and give the deserving individual big bundles of money. It's sort of a privatized bailout.

It'll be exciting, like Oprah gifting cars. People will cry, just like on the home make-over show, where they give people remodeling jobs or entire homes for free. On the surface, there's nothing seriously wrong with it, and its clever television, especially now. It does, as I said, borrow from a TV show of decades back, when a millionaire arrived as a surprise on a doorstep.

Secret Millionaire" even borrows a bit from the ancient "Queen For a Day" show - because that's all it is: like lottery winnings, most entirely unearned windfalls disappear "in a day," leaving behind more harm done than good. "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish" - and require that he go fish - "feed him for life."

Therein is the problem. In "Secret Millionaire" we can see TV reflecting and reinforcing societal and political trends that put us all in peril.

This is basically a game show with no game. Most game shows still require some skill, and contestants actually prepare by drilling in advance for 'Jeopardy,' or getting into fit shape for 'Survivor,' or rehearsing for 'American Idol.' The tireless 'Wheel Of Fortune' requires you know the difference between vowel and consonant. On NBC's wildly popular "Deal or No Deal," they wisely eliminated all requirements of knowing anything or having any skills; you need only guess the right suitcase and be able to tolerate Howie Mandel to win a million dollars.

But "Secret Millionaire" goes a step further. It asks nothing and hands out money for free. It asks for no special preparation, effort, skill or talent in advance. And of course, it asks for nothing in return.

As such, the show reinforces the dangerous idea so harmful to the working poor that simply because they are working poor, they deserve to have somebody hand them a bunch of money. They need only and hope for such an occurrence. Even better, the money is transferred to them from the rich, who have too much of it.

Fox missed something here that would have made the show much more popular. The secret millionaires should be ripped from their mansions and office penthouses by force and compelled to play, their money taken from them involuntarily. But even as is, we shouldn't miss the point that it could be called 'The Re-Distribution Of Wealth Show.'

Now, here's what you won't see on any major network: A show where "The Secret Millionaire" rewards people based on their productivity and investment of time and effort. Nobody doles out cash to those who have worked hard, educated themselves, scrimped and saved, responsibly bought homes and cars they could afford, started and built businesses, and created employment opportunities for others.

Nor will you see a show called "The Self-Made Main Street Millionaire" about people who have started with nothing or less than nothing and made fortunes through relatively ordinary small businesses and prudent financial behavior over time. There are far, far, far more of those than there are Paris Hiltons, A-Rods and Wall Street types.

You won't see this not just because no one would watch, but because it's reality TV that would contradict the philosophical belief the media folks hold dear and the ideas they wish to sell: Pulling oneself up by bootstraps is passé and freakish and no longer practical in today's America. The Have's only have by luck and theft and have too much. And the Have-Nots can only be helped by hand-outs.
