DEMO & DISCUSSION

Paul Schulenburg Painting Demonstration

Popular Cape Cod artist and Eastham resident Paul Schulenburg will present an oil painting discussion and demonstration at the Falmouth Art Center on Saturday, February 4 at 2.m.  He will bring examples of work to illustrate his particular style and to complement the current exhibit, "Winter Warmth: Glimpses, Still Life, Figure Painting, and Portraits.  His work spans a variety of subjects from figures and figure studies, still lifes and interiors to landscapes, the waterfront, and coastal views. (Sun Dress by Paul Schulenburg shown right.)

Topics to be covered will include:  choosing subject matter, effective lighting, and how to overcome problem situations in a painting.  By using a photo and painting study, he will demonstrate his technique toward creating a larger, more finished version of the study.

A member of the Copley Society in Boston, Mr. Schulenburg has received the Kahlil Gibran Award for Artistic Excellence, a residency at the Fine Arts Work Center, Juror's Choice Awards, and First Place Award at the Patron's Choice Show in 2006.

His work has appeared in singular exhibits at the Cape Cod Museum of Art and he was featured as the cover artist for the July 2007 issue American Art Collector magazine.  Currently he is represented by Addison Gallery in Orleans.

Admission for the afternoon is $20 (students $5).

NEWS YOU CAN USE

Call to Artists from Barnstable Municipal Airport
The Barnstable Municipal Airport has issued a call to Cape Cod artists who are interested in displaying their work in the new Hyannis passenger terminal.  A task force of local gallery and museum leaders was organized earlier in 2011 to help airport officials bring a Cape Cod "sense of place" to the terminal and airport grounds.  The official request for qualifications says the task force is seeking "works of originality and high quality" that reflect "the artistic and cultural legacy of Cape Cod, including the role of the region in aviation history."  The panel is co-chaired by Donald Megathlin, vice chairman of the airport commission, and Kevin Howard, executive director of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.  "We are seeking works in all media," Megathlin said. "We will consider works in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, on fabric, in metal or bronze, glass, stone, clay and wood.  We are seeking free-standing digital art and photography or in collage, along with mobiles, mosaics and murals."
Artists interested in having their work considered should complete a form available on line at the airport's web site: www.town.barnstable.ma.us/airport or on the Arts Foundation web site: www.artsfoundation.org.  The deadline is February 1, and there is no cost to apply.
