The pass is valid in all Macy's stores and macys.com on Saturday, August 27, 2011.  The cost of the coupon is $5 which is totally donated to ReBuild.  Please contribute this small amount to help us carry out our mission.  Coupons are available at the Warehouse check-out desk.

Max & Victoria Dreyfus Foundation Grant

The Board of Directors would like to acknowledge the recent grant awarded to ReBuild by the Max & Victoria Dreyfus Foundation.  This first-time grant from the Foundation will enable ReBuild to build public awareness about "sustainability" and how to achieve it can be affordably achieved in the things we eat and in how we maintain our homes.  ReBuild will use the grant funds to offer a 12- part workshop series on two aspects of sustainability:  "Eating Healthy and Eating Local" and  "Sustainable Home Renovation", the details for which are described elsewhere in this newsletter.  This will help ReBuild's founders achieve their long-standing goal of offering a practical, in-depth approach to simple but effective ways to produce and save energy in your home and how to buy or raise fresh, healthy food for your family.  We are indebted to the Dreyfus Foundation for their support that has provided us this opportunity.

Volunteers Needed

Our volunteer list continues to increase but volunteer opportunities are still available.  Please call the Executive Director, Paul Hughes, at 703-280-1719 for more information or fill out a volunteer form at the Warehouse service desk.  Volunteering can also include working from home on such things as data base entry and working in the warehouse to help build many of the repurposed items such as picnic tables and adirondack chairs.

ReBuild Makes Angie's List

ReBuild is so excited to have received favorable recognition from "Angie's List".  ReBuild was featured in an article appearing in the July on-line "Angie's List" newsletter for the DC region.  Click here if you would like to read the whole article.  Being favorably discussed in the newsletter of a well-respected "third party" attests to the value of ReBuild's product and service and reinforces the Board and staff's focus on building credibility with the community by consistently helping customers achieve the best value for their dollar while training at-risk workers and spreading the word on how to affordably live green.  For purchase of good quality reclaimed material and a plethora of our many daily necessities, we strongly urge you to subscribe to "Angie's List" and make this the first place you look to identify a reliable product or service.

Meet ReBuild's Summer Intern

Theresa

Theresa Meehan, ReBuild Intern

What is your involvement with ReBuild?

Since this June I mainly organize the sustainability workshops that we host almost every weekend on various topics, like native plants, going solar in the home, and vermicomposting. I have also been involved in outreaching to local churches and newspapers to help spread the word about ReBuild and the workshops.

How did you become affiliated with the ReBuild Warehouse?

I was looking to work with an environmental organization, and ReBuild seemed like a great opportunity to do things I hadn't done before. I was excited to help educate the public on important and useful sustainability issues. It's great to know that I am increasing the number of green-minded people in the world!

How would you encourage people who may be interested in ReBuild to become involved?

The most important thing that people who are interested in ReBuild can do is tell their family, friends and colleagues about us. As a small non-profit it is hard to spread the word, and one more person who knows about us is very helpful. Also, they can volunteer their time doing a number of activities; not all volunteers lift heavy boxes, like me for example.

What do you see as ReBuild's biggest challenges over the next several years?

I think advertising and getting the word out about ReBuild is a big challenge. I feel the customers we have are very loyal and excited about all that we do at ReBuild, but we need to find more great people like them.

What kind of activities do you enjoy while not working with ReBuild?

I really enjoy my other internship at Just Neighbors, an immigration legal services non-profit in Falls Church. It's great to be a part of an organization that helps low-income immigrants since without organizations like Just Neighbors, they probably wouldn't know about or be able to afford the help they are eligible for.

Help the Bees

(1st in the Series)

In recent years bee populations have been decreasing due to unknown causes. Join Brenda Kiessling, an Eastern Apiculture Society (EAS) Certified Master Beekeeper, and  Paul Diehl to learn about bees, including native bees, in our area and how we can help them from going extinct! Brenda has been keeping bees "since it was easy" (before varroa mites and other scourges arrived). Since 2002, she has led the 4-H Beekeeping club (2 B A BEE) in Fairfax County. She is currently involved in a 3-year research project with the Smithsonian Institution: Virginia Working Landscapes, which involves collecting/identifying pollinators (bees and butterflies) on cooperating farms in Virginia. Paul will provide advice on how to raise bees and to maintain their hives.  Please RSVP to TheresaAMeehan@gmail.com.  Walk-in workshop fee -$10. Location: The ReBuild Warehouse, 6625 Iron Place, Springfield, VA 22151.

Facts and Myths about Backyard Hen Keeping

"Chickens? In My Backyard?!"

Depending on where you live, it IS possible to raise chickens, which can help reduce your fertilizer use and give you delicious eggs! Join Kirsten Buhls from the Agriculture Natural Resources Virginia Cooperative Extension in learning about your county's regulations on hen keeping and correcting some common misconceptions of chickens. Kirsten has been with the Virginia Cooperative Extension since 2007, which provides residents of Arlington and Alexandria information on gardening, tree care, insect and disease pests, soil sampling, nutrient management and more! Constructon and maintenance of chicken coops will also be discussed.  RSVP to TheresaAMeehan@gmail.com. Suggested donation to ReBuild: $5-$10. Planting a Fall Vegetable Garden

(2nd in the Series)

If you're not ready to give up on vegetable gardening by August, or if you just didn't get to it earlier and still want to give it a try, come to this class and learn how to plant a fall vegetable garden. We'll also learn how to use cover crops to improve your soil for next spring, and hold down weeds for this Fall.   Fall is a great time for a vegetable garden because many of the insects that attack crops vanish with the coming of cooler temperatures, and those tasty finicky vegetables that hate the intense heat of summer adore our extended Indian summers. Everyone will receive a list of shorter day, cool season vegetables that will thrive in the August through December time frame in this area. This workshop is presented by Julie Speers, a Master Gardener of Northern Virginia (Arlington/Alexandria). Walk-in Workshop Fee -$10. Contact TheresaAMeehan@gmail.com for more information.

Vermicomposting- What is it? How can I do it?

(3rd in the Series)

Come and learn how to set up a simple home vermicomposting unit for red wiggler worms! Diane Dresdner, who has enthusiastically composted with worms for over 4 years, will give a demonstration and question/answer session about how your worms will give you a wonderful soil fertilizer high in Nitrogen for your plants both indoors and out! Create soil and reduce waste in our landfills at the same time by feeding your worms kitchen scraps, fall leaves, and shredded paper or cardboard. Call 703-658-8840 to pre-register by August 12th for all six sessions on "Eating Healthy and Locally" for $30 or pay $10 at the door for one session. Locatio: 6625-B Iron Place Springfield, VA 22151.
