New Pick-up Fee Policy

Due to budget constraints, ReBuild has had to begin charging a modest fee of $50 for donated material pickups in Northern Virginia.  This charge helps defray the cost of our driver, his helper, and truck operating expenses.  Hopefully, at this level, this fee is less than what you would have to pay your trash hauler for a special pickup.  And, you have the satisfaction of knowing that it is going for a worthy cause.  We hope this fee will only be temporary and apologize for any inconvenience it may cause our customers.

Free Fridays Forever!

Don't Forget About Free Fridays!

free

Remember to drop by anytime on Fridays between 11 am - 6 pm to take advantage of , ReBuild has reinstituted "Free Fridays" with items, like orphan kitchen cabinets, "one-of-a-kind" or non-matching products, and slightly damaged or incomplete items that are yours for the taking!!  With the deconstruction and renovation season in full swing, we have to make room on our floor for the new items coming in every day.  By your taking these items and your willingness to repurpose or repair them, you are helping ReBuild and saving these materials from ending up in the landfill -- another example of a "win-win-win" for you, us, and the environment!!

ReBuild Needs YOU!!

As ReBuild grows, our limited staff has become stretched.  We could use volunteers to help us in the warehouse (cashier, greeter), on the truck, making re-purposed items (raised beds), coordinating volunteers, speaking to civic groups, organizing school and young people tours, and many other ways.  If interested, please contact Paul by phone (703/280-1719) or email (pshughes1967@gmail.com).  And remember, it doesn't take long earning $5 per hour store credit to build up enough hours to purchase products for no cost or a little of nothing. One of our volunteers has been able to donate five raised beds to her daughter's elementary school to get them started on a school "learning garden".  What uses might you be able to put some of our materials?

Also, if you can't volunteer but would like to make a donation to help us, you can do so by using PayPal or mailing your check payable to ReBuild to 8929 Colesbury Pl., Fairfax, VA 22031.

Raised Bed                   Sample Planter Box

The sample planter box, 20x13x9, is made out of recycled shutters.  Great for an indoor location or covered deck to group your plants.

The orders for raised beds are still pouring in -- 4' x 4', 4' x 8', and specialty sizes!!  Standard 4' x 8' beds are $125 unassembled and $155 assembled.  It seems like quite a few folks are starting or improving their backyard gardens, using reclaimed lumber, and saving money at the same time!  We'll continue to make them as long as you keep giving us orders.  Staying with the season, you may have noticed the compost bins and the deck planters we have begun to make as well -- all made out of our reclaimed lumber using non-toxic linseed oil to treat the woodWe will also make special sized bins and planters to accommodate specific situations, like apartment balconies, street plants to enclose outside eating areas.

Upcoming ReBuild Workshops & Events

Edible Landscaping!

In this workshop, Gaye Mara will explore with us the joys and challenges of gardening with edible plants.  Gaye is a Virginia Master Gardener and a member of the Fairfax County Master Gardeners Association, which arranged with us to offer this workshop.  You will see examples of large- and small-scale garden designs (including container gardens for balconies, decks, and patios) and learn what edible and attractive plants do well in our area, how to maintain healthy plants and foil pests, and where to go for additional information on edible gardening.  Please RSVP at 703/280-1719 if you plan to attend.  Fee: no charge.  Location: The ReBuild Warehouse, 6625 Iron Place, Springfield, VA 22151.

Saturday, June 25th, 11 am

Growing Native Plants!

Join Amol Kaikini for a workshop on successfully raising native plants in your yard.  Amol has been practicing organic gardening since 1988 and is a member of the Fairfax County Master Gardeners Association, which arranged with us to offer this workshop.  He has not used any pesticides, organic or chemical for over 12 years.  He will discuss the justification for using native plants in home landscape, their impact on wildlife, how to help create balanced communities, how to help nature control your pests, what should you plant, and alternatives to invasive alien plants.  He elaborate on the key axiom of organic and sustainable gardening -- "take care of the soil and the plants will take care of themselves".  He'll explore soil stewardship, best practices to improve soil without high cost or back breaking work, and a bit about the ecology of soil.  Please RSVP at 703/280-1719 if you plan to attend.  Fee: no charge.  Location: The ReBuild Warehouse, 6625 Iron Place, Springfield, VA 22151.

Future ReBuild Workshops

Meet the ReBuild Board

spanos Bill Spanos, Treasurer

How did you become affiliated with the ReBuild Warehouse?   I was somewhat familiar with Deconstruction Services since they had done a few projects in the Waycroft-Woodlawn area of Arlington where I reside.  Then in 2008, a friend who worked with Deconstruction Services made me aware of the ReBuild group and inquired if I would consider being a Board member, which I agreed to.

How do you see ReBuild evolving?  ReBuild has the potential to become a real model for implementation of
environmentally conscious public awareness to keep re-usable building materials out of landfills, making those materials available to the public for re-use, and at the same time providing a place where people can find a new start with new skills.

What is your involvement with ReBuild?  Due to my personal commitment in a business, my biggest involvement with ReBuild has been to talk up the ReBuild concept and make my colleagues and business associates aware of the ReBuild warehouse, so that they will spread the word about ReBuild.  I hope to increase that effort this year.

How would you encourage people who might be interested in ReBuild to become involved?  I would encourage people to visit the ReBuild website and the warehouse to see what we have been doing and planning for the future, and also to sign up on the ReBuild email list.  Most importantly and if possible, to make a donation and/or purchase items from the warehouse if they see an item they could use in their homes.

What do you see as ReBuild's biggest challenges over the next several years?  The biggest challenge for ReBuild is to survive; especially considering the state of the economy.  An integral part of the survival effort will be persistence and commitment by all to spread the word about ReBuild, in order to bring more attention to the concept, which then hopefully will encourage more donations.

What is your day job?  I am a licensed realtor in Virginia and a partner/owner of Mclean Realty Group.  I perform the Property Manager role in the Group for residential properties in Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia.  Through this I am educating anyone(clients, associates and vendors) I can about ReBuild.

What kinds of activities do you enjoy while not working with ReBuild?   I surely am at an age when I could just kick back and be "retired", however, and as hectic as my real estate role can be, I really do enjoy being very active in my business.  I do manage to go to a lot of my grandkids school/sports activities, play an occasional round of golf, walk a lot with my Labradoodle, and spend as much other time at a house on the Western shore of the Chesapeake Bay with my wife(now that she is retired).

Thank you for your continuous support of ReBuild and its environmental goals.

Sincerely,
Erin Brandt                Paul S. Hughes                       Daryl Spencer
