Part-Time Volunteer Positions

Whether you are retired, a stay-at-home spouse, or someone temporarily unemployed and looking for ways to meet new friends and a constructive outlet for giving back to the community, you may want to explore several part-time positions ReBuild offers that might fit your needs.  We are interviewing for a Workshop Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, and Media/Outreach Coordinator.  If you think you might be interested in any of these positions, contact Amy at 703/280-1719 for details.

Free Fridays!

Don't Forget About Free Fridays!

free

With the arrival of warm weather, ReBuild has reinstituted "Free Fridays" with items, like orphan kitchen cabinets, "one-of-a-kind" or non-matching products, and slightly damaged or incomplete items that are yours for the taking!!  With the deconstruction and renovation season in full swing, we have to make room on our floor for the new items coming in every day.  By your taking these items and your willingness to repurpose or repair them, you are helping ReBuild and saving these materials from ending up in the warehouse -- another example of a "win-win-win" for you, us, and the environment!!

Volunteers Needed

ReBuild Needs YOU!!

Help ReBuild stretch our limited budget, and ReBuild can help you stretch your budget on your next project!!  Did you know that ReBuild volunteers earn $5.00 in store credit for every hour you volunteer which even includes the one-hour orientation session?  These can accumulate for up to two years.  Hours credit do NOT necessarily have to be incurred working in the warehouse.  Assistance in data entry, making phone calls, assistance with ReBuild workshops and fundraising events all count .

Do you have a few hours a month you would like to spend helping ReBuild?  Besides the warehouse, volunteers are needed to staff ReBuild's exhibits at community events, writing articles for ReBuild's newsletter as well as their civic association newsletter, and weekly community newspapers.  ReBuild is constantly seeking opportunities as a guest speaker at civic association meetings.  Is your civic group looking for a speaker for an upcoming event?

We also need advice in marketing ReBuild's services and in community relations from persons who might be willing to review our plans?  Do you know of someone who might be interested?  Does your company encourage their employees to volunteer time with a nonprofit organization?

These are only a few of the many ways you can become involved with ReBuild. You may have some other ideas.  We'd love to hear them.  Just call Paul at 703/280-1719.

Also, if you can't volunteer but would like to make a donation to help us, you can do so by using PayPal or mailing your check payable to ReBuild to 8929 Colesbury Pl., Fairfax, VA 22031.

Raised Beds, Compost Bins, and Deck Planters

daryl's raised bedplantar box

The orders for raised beds are still pouring in -- 4' x 4', 4' x 8', and specialty sizes!!  Standard 4' x 8' beds are $125 unassembled and $155 assembled.  It seems like quite a few folks are starting or improving their backyard gardens, using reclaimed lumber, and saving money at the same time!  We'll continue to make them as long as you keep giving us orders.  Staying with the season, you may have noticed the compost bins and the deck planters we have begun to make as well -- all made out of our reclaimed lumber using non-toxic linseed oil to treat the wood.  We will also make special sized bins and planters to accommodate specific situations, like apartment balconies, street plants to enclose outside eating areas.

Permanently Reduce Your Energy Bill with Solar!

Join us for another in a series ReBuild is presenting with one of our "green" partners, Continuum Energy Solutions, on ways to reduce your energy bills with a combination energy efficiency/solar energy solution!!  Hear Chad Laibly, an expert in home weatherization and solar energy systems with Continuum Energy, explains the benefits of an energy audit, home weatherization, solar electricity and hotwater system applications in our area -- along with current governmental financial incentives for doing so.  Full implementation of these systems can reduce your electrical and heating expense by as much as 50%-90%.  See how easy it is!  Fee: no charge.

Sustainable Landscaping

 Saturday, May 14, 11 am-Noon

Join Jim McGlone, the Virginia Department of Forestry's Urban Forest Conservationist for Northern Virginia, as he discusses how to create a stress reducing landscape for yourself that will save you time and money, reduce your impact on the planet, improve the local environment and attract butterflies and birds.  By learning the secrets of the greatest gardener of all time - Mother Nature - you can create a landscape that will help sustain you and the planet.  Jim has a Ph D in the ecology of human beings (aka economics) and had been a college professor, government researcher, and natural resource manager at an urban park, before joining the Virginia Department of Forestry.  Jim speaks widely to all age groups about urban natural resource issues, especially those related to trees.  He and his wife have eliminated turf from their quarter acre lot and replanted with native meadow and forest wildflowers and shrubs.

New Items in the Warehouse

Need Lumber? Bricks?

ReBuild has just received several truckloads of structural lumber (2x4's, 2x6's, 2x8's and 2x14x20 boards) from a large home being deconstructed in Great Falls.  Straight and beautifully preserved for decades, these rafters, ceiling and floor joists, and wall studs are great for woodworking projects, new construction, renovation projects, and garage or backyard shed construction.  Also, off the same job site, we have pallets of nice brick for use as walkways or patio projects.

2nd Dine-Out Event a Success

ReBuild held its second Dine-Out event last Thursday at the Food Matters restaurant in Alexandria.  Food Matters generously donated 10% of all the in-restaurant and carry-out food sales occurring between 5-10 pm!!  Staff, volunteers, old friends, and people just learning about ReBuild for the first time enjoyed an evening of delicious, locally-grown food, and good conversation, while learning about Food Matters'own urban agriculture and community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs.  At least three newcomers signed up as volunteers after finding out more about ReBuild that evening and visiting the warehouse.  This is yet another way ReBuild can help locally-owned, environmentally-friendly businesses and earn their support in the process.  There is no additional charge beside the regular cost of dinner at or Dine-Out events, so you get a "three-fer" by dining at a restaurant you might not be aware of, supporting a small, sustainably oriented business, and supporting ReBuild.  A truly "win-win-win" situation!!  Stay tuned for the announcement of our next Dine-Out event.

Newest Partner:  Vienna's Maple Avenue Market

Maple Avenue Market located at 128 Maple Avenue, East in Vienna, VA, 22180 has become our newest ReBuild Partner.  The Market is located in downtown Vienna right next to the W&OD bike trail, the Vienna Inn and across the street from Whole Foods Market.  Their shelves are stocked with local meats, dairy, produce, and gift items.  They grow their own produce and partner with other local farms, mainly from Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.  From May to November, Maple Avenue Market's On the Gourmet delivery truck brings local products offered at their store to farmers' markets in Northern Virginia, including the Great Falls Farmers' Market and the West End Alexandria Farmers' Market where they are regulars.  Locally-owned and operated, the Market also has its own farm in Great Falls, operates a CSA (community-supported agriculture) food buying program, and welcomes volunteers to help on the farm.  It's a great place to show children where their vegetables come from, how they are raised, and what time of the year we can enjoy their bounty.  And, Maple Avenue Market has agreed to sell our raised beds!!  If you'd like more information about the Market, visit their website (www.mapleavenuemarket.com) or call Chris or Laura at 703/957-9348.

New USPS Buy Local Produce Stamp

local

Are you one of those people who buys large quantities of boring "forever" Liberty Bell stamps?  Would you like to liven up your envelope and perhaps have the stamp represent a cause or your personal values?  Well, here's your opportunity!!  The U.S. Postal System has launched an impressive "Go Green" campaign that includes a number of new forever stamps, including the appealing one above emphasizing "buy local produce" and using "reuse bags". So don't forget to savor life outside of the garden or the kitchen.  And, for those of you who still write letters or pay your bills by mail, you can be sure to brighten up someone's day and could even write a letter telling someone about your garden!!  Help the U.S. Postal System steadily losing money with the increased use of email, support a worthwhile cause, and save yourself some money on postage stamps -- another "win-win-win" situation!

May is Watershed and Floodplain Awareness Month

No matter where you live, work or play, you are always in a watershed. A watershed is an area of land that drains to a body of water (e.g., river, stream, lake, bay, ocean...). On its journey across roofs, driveways, roads, and other hard surfaces, rainwater picks up pollution. Rainwater becomes "stormwater" as it travels into streets and down storm drain openings that lead directly to Falls Church streams and eventually to the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay.  Our behaviors have a direct impact on our local water quality. If it's down the storm drain, it's in our water! Litter, fertilizer, pesticides, motor oil, dog waste and other hazards reach our streams and rivers because of poor management practices. Help celebrate Watershed Awareness Month by limiting the use of lawn and garden chemicals, pledging to pick up after your pets, checking your car for oil leaks and picking up litter.
