Volunteers Needed

ReBuild Needs YOU!!

Help ReBuild stretch our limited budget, and ReBuild can help you stretch your budget on your next project!!  Did you know that ReBuild volunteers earn $5.00 in store credit for every hour you volunteer which even includes the one-hour orientation session?  These can accumulate for up to two years.  Hours credit do NOT necessarily have to be incurred working in the warehouse.  Assistance in data entry, making phone calls, assistance with ReBuild workshops and fundraising events all count .

Do you have a few hours a month you would like to spend helping ReBuild?  Besides the warehouse, volunteers are needed to staff ReBuild's exhibits at community events, writing articles for ReBuild's newsletter as well as their civic association newsletter, and weekly community newspapers.  ReBuild is constantly seeking opportunities as a guest speaker at civic association meetings.  Is your civic group looking for a speaker for an upcoming event?

We also need advice in marketing ReBuild's services and in community relations from persons who might be willing to review our plans?  Do you know of someone who might be interested?  Does your company encourage their employees to volunteer time with a nonprofit organization?

These are only a few of the many ways you can become involved with ReBuild. You may have some other ideas.  We'd love to hear them.  Just call Paul at 703/280-1719.

Also, if you can't volunteer but would like to make a donation to help us, you can do so by using PayPal or mailing your check payable to ReBuild to 8929 Colesbury Pl., Fairfax, VA 22031.

Cold Frame Construction Sunday February 13 1-3 p.m.

Cold Frame

Spring is around the corner and our coldframes are selling "like hotcakes"!!  At $45 apiece, we can't keep enough in stock.  If you are handy with a screw gun and have a couple hours you'd like to donate this Sunday between 1-3 pm,  please stop by the warehouse and join Daryl and Francisco in making  them for our customers.  Or, you can learn how to make them from our reclaimed lumber and windows, buy the materials, and take them home, and make the coldframes yourself.  Either way, you'll help others or yourself "get a jump on Spring planting.  Selling for $45 for a 2½ ft x 3½ ft size and slightly more for larger sizes, you can't beat these prices.  Remember, you also earn store credit at a rate of $5.00 an hour for each hour you volunteer!!  Call the warehouse (703/658-8840) if you can help.  Thanks!

Volunteer Orientation Session

Sunday February 13th  4-5 p.m.

ReBuild has begun providing hour-long "volunteer orientation sessions" for folks eager to volunteer with ReBuild.  The sessions are being offered about every two weeks.  We request that all new or potential volunteers attend one.  At the session, you will learn about ReBuild's mission, sales philosophy, store policies, the kinds of tasks needed, days/hours needed, earning store credit, and sign the requisite liability waiver and other forms.  If you are interested in attending this or a future session, please RSVP (703/280-1719) so we know how many Volunteer Manuals to print.

Home Weatherization Workshop

Saturday, February 26, 11 am

Mark Your Calendar

Considering installing solar or geothermal energy systems in your home?  Or, just plain tired of a drafty house and high heating bills in the winter?  Join us "at the warehouse" to hear Chad Laibly of Continuum Energy Solutions describe how you can (1) reduce your energy costs immediately by 30%-40% and (2) reduce the size of the renewable energy system you ultimately choose because you will not have to heating as much cold air.  Chad will explain how to use an inexpensive energy audit to prioritize your weatherization projects and get the most out of your weatherization dollar.  It's amazing how much energy you can save with a good weatherization job!!

Fee: no charge.  Location: The ReBuild Warehouse, 6625 Iron Place, Springfield, VA 22151.  Please RSVP to info@rebuildwarehouse.org.

Meet ReBuild's Family

hank

Each month we like to feature a member of our board of directors, staff, or volunteers to help our customers and friends better understand ReBuild's purpose and direction and what prompted us to get involved with ReBuild and to remain engaged.  This month's interview is with Hank Blakely, a member of our board of directors.

How did you become affiliated with The ReBuild Warehouse?

I was invited to join the Board in 2008 and accepted because of my long-standing interest in, and experience with helping to prepare "at-risk" youth for responsible jobs in the working world.

How do you see ReBuild evolving?

I see ReBuild as having the potential to develop into the preeminent social service of its kind in the Northern Virginia area-and, perhaps, in the country. I believe it is well-positioned to become a model for real-world practical experience in the job market, and solid encouragement for young people who are only asking for a chance to prove themselves.

What ways have you found to be involved with ReBuild that gives you the most pleasure and satisfaction?

I love anything that involves the development of strategy and tactics in social justice pursuits, and, believe me, there's plenty of that involved in our work on the ReBuild Board. As an added consideration there is the pleasure I derive from developing organizational business graphics: logos, stationery, and the like.

How would you encourage folks who might be interested in ReBuild to become involved?

The opportunities for such involvement are many: serving as a volunteer in the warehouse activities; bringing one's professional experience to the service of the organization; or even something as simple (and necessary and greatly appreciated) as making a donation to ensure the impact of our efforts.

What do you see as ReBuild's biggest challenges over the next several years?

Without doubt, its survival. It's important to remember that ReBuild is a somewhat unique entity, being both a business and a non-profit organization, and that we depend at least as much on tax-free donations as we do on our warehouse sales.

What is your day job?

That's a tough question to answer, and, to be truthful, it sometimes it makes me a little dizzy to think about it. Officially I'm "retired," but, as many will know that is a tricky word, since most retired people wind up working harder in their retirement than they ever did in their former work life. Since my retirement, I have primarily been involved in social justice and community organization work.In that time I have co-founded a number of community organizations, including the Fairfax Bill of Rights Coalition, the Sustainable Reston Committee, and the Fairfax Campaign for a Living Wage. In 2008 I was honored to be chosen the Reston Citizen of the year and was recently elected an At Large Director of the Reston Citizen's Association. I currently serves as Vice President of the Fairfax Coalition for Smarter growth, and am the Lay Minister for Worship at my church.

What kinds of activities do you enjoy doing while not working with ReBuild?

Actually, much of my enjoyment derives from the activities listed in my answer to the above question. But I derive further pleasure from painting and writing.

ReBuild Teams with Woodbridge High School

ReBuild was recently asked by Paul Steiner, construction technology teacher at Woodbridge High School, about partnering with his class to build a modern backyard shed from reclaimed building materials.  The idea is to train his students in building a miniature "house" and, when completed, selling it to someone in the community with the proceeds going to ReBuild -- in short, a "win-win" deal for everyone.  ReBuild is delighted to help and grateful that Paul contacted us.  If you are working on a school or community project and you think ReBuild might be able to help, contact the warehouse (703/658-8840) and let's discuss it.  If your project involves community service, reusing reclaimed building materials, or environmental sustainability, we're interested!!

 Lost Opportunity

February marks the 12th month that we have lost the opportunity to advertise ReBuild on the streets and roads our truck travels throughout the DC metro area.  Because our truck has NO MARKINGS identifying it as belonging to ReBuild, we are passing up an opportunity to advertise ReBuild's purpose, location, phone number, and website.  The cost for getting an advertising "wrap", as it is called, for our 14-ft enclosed truck is $4,400.  With little money available for direct advertising, ReBuild needs to leverage all the assets at its disposal.  As mentioned last week, we have started a fundraising drive to raise money to purchase a "wrap" as quickly as possible.  This is ReBuild's current top fundraising priority.  Won't you join us in helping ReBuild make full use of the assets it already owns?  If you would like to help, click here.

Thank you for your continuous support of ReBuild and its environmental goals.

Sincerely,
Erin Brandt                Paul S. Hughes                       Daryl Spencer
