Loyal Customer Rewards

As a way of thanking our customers for their loyalty, ReBuild has launched a New Savings Program that helps you save as you work on your various projects.  We realize that you may not need to buy all the items you will need at one time, so we want to help you space out purchases and help you save at the same time.  Beginning Saturday, January 22nd, ReBuild will include with each purchase a coupon worth 10% off your next purchase of $50 or more in the following month.  Only one coupon can be used per purchase.  This savings is in addition to any discount sales price being offered at the time of redemption.

Stop by soon and begin to accumulate your saving discounts.

Volunteers Needed

ReBuild Needs YOU!!

Help ReBuild stretch our limited budget, and ReBuild can help you stretch your budget on your next project!!  Did you know that ReBuild volunteers earn $5.00 in store credit for every hour you volunteer which even includes the one-hour orientation session?  These can accumulate for up to two years.  Hours credit do NOT necessarily have to be incurred working in the warehouse.  Assistance in data entry, making phone calls, assistance with ReBuild workshops and fundraising events all count .

Do you have a few hours a month you would like to spend helping ReBuild?  Besides the warehouse, volunteers are needed to staff ReBuild's exhibits at community events, writing articles for ReBuild's newsletter as well as their civic association newsletter, and weekly community newspapers.  ReBuild is constantly seeking opportunities as a guest speaker at civic association meetings.  Is your civic group looking for a speaker for an upcoming event?

We also need advice in marketing ReBuild's services and in community relations from persons who might be willing to review our plans?  Do you know of someone who might be interested?  Does your company encourage their employees to volunteer time with a nonprofit organization?

These are only a few of the many ways you can become involved with ReBuild. You may have some other ideas.  We'd love to hear them.  Just call Paul at 703/280-1719.

Also, if you can't volunteer but would like to make a donation to help us, you can do so by using PayPal or mailing your check payable to ReBuild to 8929 Colesbury Pl., Fairfax, VA 22031.

Needed:  Loyal Customers

Like any business, ReBuild requires a steady flow of repeat customers in order to grow and achieve its goals.  Almost every property owner has an ongoing list of remodeling, renovation, or expansion projects.  We just ask that you consider ReBuild as you compile your list of materials and whether all the items need necessarily be new.  Instead, reclaimed items are likely to be much less expensive.  These can include:

n  Kitchen cabinets refinished or painted for your kitchen, laundry room, workbench, garage, shed or soil potting table

n  2x4's to hang drywall on nonload-bearing walls in basement you are remodeling

n  roof rafters, ceiling joists, and 2x4's for an addition, garage or outdoor shed

n  added insulation in a drafty house

n  light fixtures and ceiling fan for a newly remodeled family room

n  classic oak flooring to replace old carpeting over a plywood subfloor

n  perfectly good refrigerator or stove for your second home or rental property

n  matching ceramic tile to replace an existing bathroom or foyer floor

n  solid wood interior or exterior door to replace a damaged one

n  built-in wall systems and bookcases for your recreation room or study

n  relatively new sash windows for a planned new addition, garage or shed

n  toilets, bidets, and vanities for a renovated master bathroom

n  pavers or stacked stone for a new rear patio or garden wall

n  2x8's and 2x4's to build your own raised garden for Spring

Comings and Goings

Many of you have gotten to know Chris Rusin at the front desk over the past couple of months after his joining ReBuild's staff.  Chris provided a big boost to the warehouse during the Fall that helped us exceed our sales projections during the last 2010 quarter.  Unfortunately, due to an illness contracted in November, he has been unable to continue working for ReBuild.  He quickly became a valued member of our senior management team and, in the three months he was with us, made many useful suggestions for organizing warehouse displays, pricing, and website redesign.  He will be greatly missed, and we wish him a speedy recovery as he begins to regain his health and best wishes in his next position.

Joining ReBuild as our new Assistant Warehouse Manager is Mario Vargas. He comes to us having worked for four years as Warehouse Manager for the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) where he handled all aspects of the warehouse, including obtaining and receiving food donations, inventorying items, preparing food boxes, distributing boxes, managing staff, and organizing volunteers.  His prior experience includes stints with Arlingtonians Meeting Emergency Needs (AMEN) and a small residential remodeling company.  Mario enjoys working with customers and has an impressive array of software application skills that can benefit ReBuild.  He already is having a positive impact on ReBuild's operations.  Mario is pursuing his education in civil engineering on a part-time basis at the Northern Virginia Community College.  Be sure to take the time to say "hello" the next time you visit the warehouse.

Help Wanted

ReBuild is seeking volunteers to fill two critical needs.  The first is an Assistant Workshop Coordinator to help us generate workshop topics, arrange for speakers, and coordinate at least two Saturday workshops per month.  The second position is an Assistant Volunteer Coordinator to help organize the initial volunteer orientation session, confirm volunteer work times, maintain our volunteer list, enter volunteer hours worked onto an Excel spreadsheet, and keep track of store credit hours earned and redeemed.  Most of the work for both positions can be done from your home and should involve approximately 2-3 hours per week.  Both would work directly with the Executive Director.  If interested, contact Paul at 703/280-1719.

ReBuild is also looking for volunteers to help build cold frames on a Sunday afternoon in February.  If you are interested and are handy with tools, please contact Paul at 703-280-1719.

Cold Frame Orders Now Being Taken

coldframe

Are you a gardener already tired of Winter and can't wait for Spring to   come?  Or, next Fall, would you like to extend your growing season, grow a few salad vegetable during the Winter in your backyard or on your patio?  Then you might want to consider a cold frame.

What is a cold frame?  Basically, a cold frame is a rectangular box with the back higher than the front so rain can drain off, covered with a transparent roof that lets the sun in.  Its size can vary depending upon the materials available.  ReBuild uses reclaimed lumber and old window sash to reduce costs.

A cold frame is essentially a "miniature greenhouse that takes advantage of solar heat for warmth, providing the same benefits with limited space at minimal expense.  Soil and other materials in the cold frame absorb heat energy during the day, and the protective covering and insulated sides help to retain this energy at night.

ReBuild is offering ready-made and made-to-order cold frames. If you do not have time or are not sure how to do it, check with our staff on sizes, prices, and delivery dates.  Prices start at only $45 for a 3'x4' unit. Stop in and check out our display model or size your own unit.  You also can choose a reclaimed window or door from our large selection, and we will build it for you.  Or, if you would like to make one yourself, there is an article on how to do so in the October 2010 issue of This Old House.  ReBuild has plenty of reclaimed sash window and lumber at modest prices that you can use.  This is the ideal time to start your Spring garden!!

First Dine-Out Event a Success

ReBuild held its first Dine-Out for volunteers, staff, board of directors, and friends at the Springfield Restaurant & Pizzeria on the evening of January 10th.  Thirty-seven people attended.  The food was delicious, moderately priced, and served by experienced and caring wait staff.  It was an opportunity for all of us who are often pressed during the work day to have a relaxed meal with others who care about ReBuild to get to know one another better in an informal, less rushed setting.   We'd like to thank everyone who came out.  It appeared we all had a great time.  Planned as an "off night" event that benefited the restaurant as well as ReBuild which earned a donation from the restaurant of 20% of our guests checks, it was design to introduce folks to a little known small business and demonstrate the quality of service one can expect from small, caring local establishments.  The restaurant was so pleased with the experience, that the owner has invited ReBuild back again -- possibly sometime in March.  Watch our newsletter and website for more details.

Friends & Supporters Fuel ReBuild's Growth

Building on ReBuild's upward sales trajectory that continued through 2010 and that resulted in a 35% increase in revenues last year, we are looking for 2011 to be the warehouse's "breakout year".  With increased sales, increased volunteer support, and tightening of operational expenses, we are projecting ReBuild will begin to breakeven operationally this year.

ReBuild could not be going this as fast as it has without your support -- as customers, material donors, financial contributors, and volunteers.  We appreciate the time and commitment each of you made to our success.  We would especially like to thank those who have made a financial donation by publically recognizing your gifts.  Our financial donors include:

ReBuild also would like to thank our many business, nonprofit, and governmental friends with whom we have developed ongoing relationships and without whom we would not be able to prosper as we fulfill our mission.  We thank each and every one of you!!

All of you -- customers, staff, volunteers, donors, and partners -- contributed to us having a banner year, something that I'm not sure we would have predicted in 2009 in the depth of the recession.  We appreciate your loyalty and commitment to ReBuild's product recycling, job training and environmental goals.  Our staff will work even harder in 2011 to continue to earn your trust and build upon our success.

Thank you for your continuous support of ReBuild and its environmental goals.
