Hello everyone,

With summer coming to a close ReBuild is gearing up for the change in season with fantastic sales and events.  We also have some great news to share with you.
ReBuild is officially a "Live Green Spot"

Thanks to Steve Ma and Megan Berrett at LiveGreen.net  ReBuild has been named a "Live Green Spot".  Live Green makes eco-friendly living and business practices easier and more affordable the DC metropolitan area. They are a membership organization providing support to green businesses and discounts on everyday green products and services for consumers. (Information taken from livegreen.net)  Memberships can be purchased directly thru the website OR at The ReBuild Warehouse.  When you see a business displaying the Live Green Spot logo on their door or website, you can shop there confidently knowing that it went through Live Green's rigorous screening process.   Live Green members receive special discounts at over 30 businesses that have been named Live Green Spots.  Learn how Steve and Megan decided that ReBuild passed the criteria to become a live green spot and find out about really great upcoming events in your community.

Springfield Poker Run & Crestwood Presentation - Saturday September 12th

Our Springfield Poker Run and Crestwood Springfield Presentation was a success!

The poker run was held to support local & green Springfield businesses.  Starting at 9:00am those playing were to visit four businesses (Fischer Hardware, Auntie T's Consignment, Whole Foods & The Swiss Bakery), in any order, and end up back at ReBuild by 1:30pm for a special presentation.  Players chose a card from each business to make a full poker hand.  Best hand won two free tickets to the DC Green Festival and a 20% discount from ReBuild. Worst Hand won a one year free Live Green membership to LiveGreen.net (www.livegreen.net), and a 15% discount from ReBuild.

Robyn Carter then presented a wealth of knowledge during her special presentation on the significance of Springfield as one of the first "Pre-Planned" cities of its time.  She shared original advertisements and documentation as well as a deep passion for the history and development of Springfield.  Robyn received support from not only residents of Springfield who came to hear her speak, but also from the Springfield Civic Association. (www.springfieldcivic.org/) ReBuild plans to host Robyn again in the future, please keep your eyes open for this event.

Reminder of Upcoming Events
Article Sunday September 20th:

Sierra Club Tour of the ReBuild Warehouse (2:00 - 4:00 pm)
Join Sierra Club members and friends in a discussion of the deconstruction process and how reclaimed building materials are sold to families and small businesses for new, remodelling and restoration projects with the profits going to fund training programs for hard-to-place workers in new "green collar" jobs.

From 1:30-3:30 p.m., Potomac Overlook Park's weekly family event Meet Me on a Sunday will be featuring local beekeeper, Paul Diehl, exhibiting his honey and bee's wax. Geothermal Options LLC is a Fairfax City-based geothermal heat pump consultant and distributor; their booth will explain geothermal and show how it can save money and the environment.  Additionally, the park will be hosting Pedego Bike Company, which will have two electric bikes for viewing and test riding. The park will also be hosting DeConstruction Services, LLC, an environmental company that assists building owners in donating salvaged material from disassembled buildings to nonprofit organizations that sell it for drastically reduced prices to re-modelers, landlords, and homeowners of all income levels for renovation and economic development needs.  Nathan Bynum, the Jazzy Juggler, will also be there to entertain people of all ages.

Tuesday September 29th:
ReBuild teams up with Green Drinks 6:30-9:00pm
Please note that the start time of this event has changed from 7:00pm to 6:30pm.  The ReBuild warehouse will host a first of its kind gathering of all seven chapters of Green Drinks in the DC area to celebrate the work of six local environmentally-conscious artists.  Green Drinks is an environmental business network and ReBuild is a nonprofit organization raising funds to train workers in "green collar" jobs.  All of the artists will be selling or auctioning off the pieces they have created.  Each work of art is extremely unique and original and will make a great addition to any event or home.  We are expecting an unprecedented gathering of DC-area residents and small business owners who are passionate about Green issues.

  · Bicycling is the second most popular outdoor activity in America, averaging 62 outings per bicyclists in 2008.
  · The number of Americans who ride bicycles is greater than all those who ski, golf, and play tennis combined.
  · The majority of bicycle trips are less than 30 minutes in length.
  · Nearly 40% of all bike trips are 1 mile or less.
  · Only 0.42% of American workers (650,000+) use a bike as their main vehicle for commuting.
  · 54% of bicycle commuters commute by bike year-round.
  · The average bicycle commute is 7.5 miles each way and takes 30.7 minutes.
  · 71% of Americans say they would like to bicycle more than they do now.
  · The #1 reason given for not bicycling is a lack of access to a bicycle.
  · Less than half (46%) of Americans age 16 and older have regular access to a bicycle.
  · As of 2008, in some Portland, OR neighborhoods nearly 1/3 of residents use a bicycle as their primary or secondary mode to get to work.
  · A 2008 AARP survey found that 15% of older adults said they had ridden a bicycle more frequently since gas prices had risen, yet only 40% said they thought their neighborhood had adequate bicycle accommodations.
  ·  Communities with more parks have significantly higher levels of bicycling and walking for transportation.
  ·  Workers whose commutes are shortest and go through the most connected streets are the most likely to bike or walk to work.
