ReBuild Warehouse Website
Greetings!

Hello Everyone,

August is turning into a pretty hot month, but the warehouse has some "cool" sale offers.  We have received beautiful new items and wanted to share bits of community news with you as well.

E-Recycling Day

Last month we held an E-Recycling day here at the warehouse.  We recycled monitors, VCRs, telephones, printers and miscellaneous computer parts with E-Tech Recycling in Chantilly, Virginia.  Gordon, the owner, was helpful and extremely knowledgeable.  E-Tech is a fantastic company that is dedicated to keeping electronics out of landfills by either sending still usable electronics to countries that need them or recycling the plastics and metals at the proper facilities.  If you are thinking of upgrading your electronics, please visit  E-Tech Recycling to recycle your old ones.

Location: 4116 Walney Rd in Chantilly, VA 20151
Contact: Gordon (703) 378-5500

Nova Green Drinks - New day and location

Once a month, people around the world that work in the environmental field or are interested in the environment, meet up for happy hour at informal sessions known as Green Drinks.  It is an opportunity for the local sustainability community to socialize, network, and learn from one another. It's a great way of catching up with people you know and also for making new contacts.  The Fairfax Chapter has changed days and location.  They meet every third Tuesday at Jammin Java.

Summer Volunteer Salute

Abby Bryant and Mohammed Amadi, our two summer ReBuild student volunteers, will be returning to school at the end of this month. We wanted to take this time to thank them for their hard work and dedication to the ReBuild mission.

Volunteers

We met Abby at Springfield Days this year.  She is currently in the process of earning a Bachelor of Science in Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT) at James Madison University.  She has also studied abroad in Malta where she worked on a project promoting Agro-Environment with local farmers.

Mohammed will be returning to high school as a junior.  We connected with him thru the Northern Virginia Youth Workforce Development Program.  The Workforce Development Program provided intense training sessions to help prepare youth to be leaders in tomorrow's workforce.

We would also like to thank Ellie Lockwood, Glenn Levy and Eric Souder for their assistance this summer.  They shared great knowledge and experience with us.  All of our volunteers had an appreciation for our mission and were a great help to us during their time with us.  They worked hard and brought positive energy to the warehouse.  We wish them luck and invite them back in the future

Volunteer Corner

ReBuild is always grateful for new volunteers.  We are looking for people with a passion for the environment, the dedication to assisting others to best of their ability and who take pride in the work they do.  Most importantly we are looking for people who want to enjoy their time and be a part of an important mission.

The ReBuild Warehouse is a nonprofit organization helping to keep valuable building materials out of landfills by accepting donations of quality items and making them available to the community at low costs.  With our profits we will fund training programs for hard-to-place workers in "green collar" jobs such as deconstruction, green roofing, warehouse management, solar installation and similar fields.  Your assistance will help us achieve this goal and offer support to those who are looking to better their lives.

Volunteer Corner

If you are 18 years or older and interested in learning more and volunteering your time with us, please come by the warehouse to fill out our volunteer form - we would love to meet you.  You can also send us an e-mail, at info@rebuildwarehouse.org, with your information and we will get back in touch with you.  Younger volunteers, such as Boy or Girl Scouts, high school environmental clubs, and church groups can help us deliver flyers to homes in neighborhoods doing a lot of renovation.  If you know someone who may be interested, please forward this information to them as well!
Donations

Your cash donation will enable us to fulfill our mission of training hard-to-place workers in "green collar" jobs, such as asbestos and lead abatement, solar panel and "green roof" installation, and home weatherization.  ReBuild is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization and your contribution is tax-deductible.

Checks should be made payable to "ReBuild" and sent to our business office at 8929 Colesbury Pl., Fairfax, VA 22031.

We are thankful for your support of our mission.
Attention Contractors and Remodelers

If you have not yet had the chance to visit The ReBuild Warehouse we invite you to stop by at your convenience.  We have a wide variety of quality gently used building materials at prices that offer you great savings for your next project - no matter how large or small.  Our August sales specials also may offer assistance if you are looking for specific quantities of items.

Residential Energy Saving Facts

Buildings account for 70% of all U.S. electricity consumption and 40% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.

The average American family spends more than 5% of their income on home energy costs (16% for households at 150 percent or less of the poverty line).

The average U.S. home is about 40 years old and uses roughly 40% more energy than homes built after 2000.

Deep building energy efficiency retrofits with an average investment of $5,000-$20,000 per home using proven techniques and off-the-shelf technologies can cut energy use by 20-40%.

For the average homeowner spending $1,500-$3,000 per year on residential energy, savings of 20-40% amount to $300 to $1,200 in annual savings -- as little as a 4-5 year payback period.

LEED for Homes

On Monday August 10th ReBuild hosted a seminar for professionals organized by Bobby Croghan of the USGBC-NCR Residential Green Building Advocacy Committee.  The presentation was given by Erik Hoffland - Architect, and Andrea Foss of EveryDayGreen.  They discussed roles and responsibilities of project team members, how LEED for Homes is different from other LEED rating systems, and what your LEED Provider brings to the project.  If you are interested in additional information please visit www.everydaygreen.com

Even with a crowed warehouse and the summer heat the presentation went well.  Thank you Bobby, Erik & Andrea for holding your presentation here at the warehouse.
