Greetings!
If you are new to the Kort Report, I welcome you to my newsletter. If you have already been a subscriber then I thank you for remaining interested in the work I do.
Our last talk by therapist Elana Gottfried at the Center for Relationship and Sexual Health was a hit! She did a great job and the participants really seemed to enjoy it.
As a gay man I am learning a lot about female sexuality and more than I ever thought I would ever know. I am so glad to have this understanding.
I learned that women have performance anxiety similar to men. I knew they did in terms of wanting to do it correctly and had anxiety about making sure their man was pleased. What I didn't know was that women's bodily sexual functioning does not perform if they are overly anxious.
Similar to men having erectile disorders based on performance anxieties I learned that women who are overly anxious will not lubricate in addition to other bodily dysfunctions.
While I realize now that should be obvious it wasn't to me.
I went through a lot of training over the past years to become a sex therapist and certainly can't know everything. I am continuing to learn and want to know as much as I can to help my clients and I am not afraid to admit it.
A great book that I plan to read which was revised on women and sexuality called, Sex Matters for Women, Second Edition: A Complete Guide to Taking Care of Your Sexual Self by Sallie Foley MSW, Sally A. Kope MSW, and Dennis P. Sugrue Ph.D. is available at amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/Sex-Matters-Women-Second-Complete/dp/1609184696/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1331146883&sr=8-4.
Happy Spring to everyone.
Warmly,
Joe Kort, Ph.D., LMSW

So many men worry about their penis size!
I just wrote an article for Attitude Magazine in the UK answering what a man with a smaller penis should do when dating men who care about his size.
Sex Educator Dan Savage did a great video response to another man worried about how small endowed he is. Watch here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2o0NSyhWXJA

10 Surprising Facts About Straight Teenage Boys
This is an interesting article about heterosexual teenage boys. Younger males are more tolerant of homosexuality. This is very encouraging to me having been a young gay teenager bullied and disliked by my straight male peers.

I'm a sex addict who'll go with anyone
Joe Kort, Ph,D, writes for Attitude Magazine in the UK
Dear Attitude,
I have always had an active sex life. Throughout my 20's, I was proud never to end an evening without having picked someone up. Apps such as Grindr have only made this easier, but I find myself continually scouring the internet for any encounter I can get. I've promised myself to stop, but can't stay away from the cruising spots near where I live. Some days, I can't even walk past without giving in. I used to take pride in attracting men; now I just go with anyone. Despite feeling dreadful afterwards, I can't stop seeking out sex with strangers.

Dr. Joe's Upcoming Workshops, Teleclasses and Trainings
Psychotherapy Networker Symposium
March 21-25, 2012 Washington, DC.
Sex Addiction
Friday Morning After nearly 30 years of batting about terms like sexual addiction and sexual compulsivity
to describe out-of-control sexual behavior, the panel for DSM-5 is considering formally recognizing hypersexual disorder. Yet therapists generally remain confused about the different behaviors that distinguish hypersexuality.
This workshop will teach you how to diagnose and treat all types of out-of-control sexual behaviors, from having a high sex drive to sexual compulsivity to being a little kinky. You'll learn to differentiate between normative and non-normative sexual behaviors, and why sexual fetishes and paraphilia aren't hypersexual behaviors. We'll focus on up-to-date treatment techniques and approaches that'll help clients understand the grief, anger, humiliation, and powerlessness that can lie at the root of their sexual impulses, and discuss ways to help them replace shame with self-compassion and keep their sexual desires from dictating their lives. Is Bisexuality Real?
Saturday Morning Bisexuality can be misunderstood by both gays (who sometimes perceive bisexuals as trying to maintain heterosexual privileges by keeping one foot in that world) and straights (who often view bisexuals as postponing coming out as gay). Numerous, contradictory research studies and theories about the prevalence, definition, and even the existence of bisexuality only add to the confusion. This workshop will help you understand bisexual orientation, including the contrasts between male and female bisexuality. You'll learn what differentiates sexual orientation from sexual fantasies and sexual behaviors, and how to assess whether someone is bisexual or is using the label as a bridge to coming out as gay or lesbian. You'll leave the workshop with a deeper understanding of how to guide your clients through bisexual and other sexual-identity issues.

Gay Affirmative Therapy for the Straight Clinician by author and psychotherapist Dr. Joe Kort Thursday May 3rd from 9am to 4pm Registration starts at 8:30am As a counselor or therapist, it's not enough to be gay-friendly. Even the best intentioned therapists have some level of homophobia to overcome. From birth, heterosexist culture imprints us to think that heterosexuality is primary, and that any other orientation is inferior. It's not even enough to be gay yourself. Gay or straight, we're taught the homo-negative belief that the "alternative lifestyle" of being gay and lesbian is a more difficult way to live. But the "alternative" of living heterosexually is actually harder for gays and lesbians, and can lead to depression and self-defeating, or even self-destructive behaviors. Participants will: - Understand psychological trauma of growing up gay and lesbian
- Recognize stages of coming out
- Develop treatment skills in dealing with the trauma and different stages of coming out
Workshop Fees Early registration received by March 31st - $100 Payments received by April 1st and on - $125 Registration at the door - $135 Lunch in on your own This program is approved by the National Association of Social Workers (provider # 886487646) for 6 continuing education contact hours. NASW CEUs are accepted by most licensing boards.
