Greetings!

Welcome all the new subscribers this month to Kort's Korner. I hope you enjoy my newsletters. I always welcome feedback and input for future mailings.

September has been HORRIFIC for gay teenagers. As we approach National Coming Out Day October 11, I am sickened that at least 4 teenagers won't be able to celebrate. Why? Because they killed themselves because of bullying. These dead teenagers won't be able to enjoy their coming out because of someone else's violent and pathetic disdain for homosexuality.

If you have not read there have been four suicides in September. Of course all of them are horrible but the one getting the most attention is the student at Rutgers Univerversity.

In one of several articles in the New York Times http://www.aolnews.com/crime/article/rutgers-student-tyler-clementi-suicide-suspects-dharun-ravi-and-molly-wei-silent/19658110, the accused bullies of a targeted gay roommate are the following:

Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei, both 18, were charged earlier this week with two counts each of invasion of privacy for allegedly using a camera to view and transmit a live image of fellow 18-year-old Tyler Clementi "making out with a dude," according to Ravi's Twitter postings. Clementi was Ravi's roommate, and he killed himself on Sept. 22 by jumping off New York's George Washington Bridge after finding out about the Web video.

In all my writings I talk about the trauma of growing up gay and lesbian. I address the post traumatic stress disorder gays and lesbians experience during their coming out process. Imagine keeping something so core and crucial to your identity deep inside you without being able to tell anyone--not even G-d--because you learn in your religion that G-d would frown upon who you are.

Have times changed for gay teens? Yes. Have they changed for gay children? NO!

You can help.

1. Coming out as a gay or lesbian person absolutely is the best thing you can do so everyone can put a human face on someone who is gay.
2. Coming out as a family member of someone who is gay and lesbian can often be even more powerful than being the gay person themselves.
3. Confront anyone who says, "That is so gay". You would not support someone saying, "I jewed him down". Schools need to do something about kids saying that. It is disrespectful and wrong.
4. If you are a therapist or health professional, leave gay literature around your office. There are local gay newspapers and national magazines and newsletters you can post on your bulletin boards and leave in your waiting room.
5. Anytime you hear a joke or passing remark that puts a gay or lesbian person down, stop it. You don't have to be mean you can simply say, "Please don't talk like that around me I don't like it."
6. If you worry that doing any of these things other than number one will cause people to think you are gay so you don't say anything, address your own homophobia. You are doing yourself and gays and lesbians a disservice by staying quiet.

Usually I am not so worked up and angry in my newsletters. However, I have been saying for years that things are not much better for gay teens and I keep hearing people tell me they are. These teen suicides are showing us that they are not. The problem is before they come out, during their coming out and still afterward for many gay teens.

Warmly,

Joe Kort, Ph.D., LMSW

Includes treatment of couples suffering from symptoms of sexual acting out; sometimes diagnosed as sexual addiction, or compulsive sexual behavior, and compulsive sexual infidelities.

This teleseminar will explore how individuals and partners are affected by compulsive masturbation, erotic imagery, cyber relationships and real time infidelity through the internet.

How do therapists treat couples and individuals who present with sex addiction symptoms?  Is it always pathological or is it sometimes a deeper symptom of a problematic marriage or a differential diagnostic tool for a comorbid psychiatric issue?

This workshop will teach helping professionals how to:

  1. Provide appropriate diagnosis of sexual disorders such as sexual compulsivity, sexual addiction, compulsive infidelity and other sexual behavioral disorders.
  2. Help partners accept responsibility for the repair of the sexual dysfunction and work through reactivity and increase insight regarding the sexual dysfunction as it relates to object relations and personal sexual history.
  3.        Address the nonsexual meanings of the sexual behaviors or lack thereof including cracking the code of fantasy and desire.
  4. Help the individual and couple restore or create erotic intimacy after an affair.

This class includes didactic material, uses case examples and experiential exercises, and addresses couples from all sexual orientations.
