Greetings!
I want to welcome all the new subscribers this month to Kort's Korner.
Also I am excited to announce that I am not Joe Kort, PhD! I received my doctorate in clinical sexology. I now am armed with training in sexual trauma, sexual addiction and sexual abuse and now sexual health. It feels like the right direction to be heading after years of training and being immersed in how to help people with sexual issues. Now I am focusing on sexual health.
I have been focusing on and exploring what healthy sexual recovery can look like following sexual trauma and sexual addiction.
Since the 1980's when Dr. Patrick Carnes popularized the term, "sexual addiction" there has been much controversy over whether or not sex can really be an addiction. Some researchers such as sexologist Eli Coleman call it compulsive sexual behavior (CSB)--a manifestation of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Other researchers call it a sexual impulse control disorder. There is so much debate over what to call it that it distracts clinicians from focusing on the treatment. It makes sense because to treat the disorder, knowing what to call it dictates the treatment.
I blogged about the sexual addiction controversy here.
I prefer the term sexual dependency syndrome as I believe there are many reasons for why someone experiences hypersexuality. This term allows for all the possibilities including sexual addiction.
What is agreed upon are many of the reasons for excessive sexual behavior. Here are some reasons reported to cause loss of control sexual behavior:
- Sexual Abuse
- Sexual Trauma
- Religious and Spiritual Abuse
- Bipolar Disorder
- Personality Disorder
- Attention Deficit Disorder
- Attachment Disorder
I primarily use the sexual addiction treatment model developed by Patrick Carnes. I have found it to be the be most useful in treating loss of control sexual behavior. However it is limited. It does not work for everyone nor does it have a healthy recovery model over time.
Overall, there is little to no research on what erotic recovery can look like for these individuals. It is often left up to the clinician, culture, religious institutions or a partner of the sex addict. This is dangerous as it allows for sexual prejudice, judgment and bias from everyone which contributes to the shame for the sexually addicted person.
Recovery should be from the client's mind's eye and what works for him or her, not the clinician or anyone else.
I plan to provide teleclasses, workshops and talks focusing on erotic recovery and how that can look very different for each individual. Sexual recovery does not have to mean sexual abstinence nor does it have to mean rigid sexual restriction.
Stay tuned!
Sincerely, Joe Kort, PhD, LMSW

DEPATHOLOGIZING PORN
Psychotherapy Networker Teleseminar
with Dr. Joe Kort and Dr. Tammy Nelson
Thursdays, January 14, 21, 28;
February 4 Time: 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM EST CE Credits: 4 hours Fee: $85; Online Member Discount: $75
Even though Internet porn has become ubiquitous in our society, many of us (including therapists) still tend to view its use as a symptom of sexual addiction or deviancy, a form of marital infidelity, and/or a serious threat to the relationship. But there are multiple reasons that people use porn, and it can have many meanings. In this course, you'll learn how to help couples face and weather the immediate crisis when a spouse discovers that the other spouse (usually the man) is secretly using pornography. We'll explore how to help couples depathologize the issue and investigate what it means in terms of three basic reasons most men seek out porn, as well as potential problems associated with each. We'll talk about helping the spouses develop empathy and validation for each other and, finally, create a more differentiated sex life together, which balances shared intimacy and privacy.

Humorous Fact
Andrew Sullivan who writes the blog, "The Daily Dish" posted this very sad but true statistic involving the states which allow first cousins to marry outnumber the states which allow gay marriage.
