Greetings!
Assessing social impact is challenging for foundations whether they are making grants, PRIs, or market-rate mission investments. We do know that effective evaluation begins with the articulation of clear, agreed on outcomes. Ideally, the outcome measures can be consistently applied across grant or investment portfolios so that the cost benefit of various investments can be compared. The Impact Investment and Reporting Standards (IRIS) are being developed to provide a common reporting language. A recent case study describing the KL Felicitas Foundation's use of IRIS illuminates how it can be valuable to philanthropic investors.
