   Innovate. Leverage. Grow.

Greetings!

Social investing was prominent in discussions at two major conferences this month. The Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders conference delved into ways to transform the way we grow and distribute food. It highlighted community gardens, agriculture programs for urban youth, and a chain of grocery stores that stock locally grown produce and food products created by local entrepreneurs, as well as the Fresh Food Financing Initiative presented by Jeremy Nowak of The Reinvestment Fund.

The Social Impact Exchange's Conference on Scaling created a platform for highly acclaimed, research-backed educational, social and economic development programs to present strategies for expanding their reach. Presenters included such organizations as YouthBuild, Ways to Work, and Uncommon Schools. As part of the event, nearly 200 business plans were submitted by nonprofit organizations for review by philanthropic and investment professionals.

Both convenings emphasized the need to draw on the full range of financial instruments, from grants and PRIs to market rate investments, in order to create substantial change.

Sincerely,

Peter Berliner
