Building Tools for Effective Philanthropy

February 2010 Newsletter
Greetings!

After a disaster, and the first wave of aid is delivered, the challenge of rebuilding can be daunting. In this e-newsletter, we feature a story on how the Meyer Memorial Trust used a loan guarantee to help rebuild homes after a flood. PRIs were also employed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and demonstrated how a range of financing tools can foster recovery. We look forward to tracking how PRIs are deployed by foundations in Haiti and other distressed communities in the coming year.

The White House has proposed a number of initiatives that represent opportunities for leverage for PRI makers. These include support for the National Housing Trust Fund, the Partnership for Sustainable Communities, and Promise Neighborhoods, which are designed to replicate successful social programs. Several of the workshops planned for the Network's national conference in May will address ways in which foundations can work with federal programs to create social change. It's an opportunity you won't want to miss.

Guarantees an Important Tool in Disaster Recovery: Special Member Interview - Meyer Memorial Trust

Meyer Memorial Trust, ShoreBank Enterprise Cascadia, and the Community Action Team partnered to repair hundreds of homes ravaged by the late 2007 floods in the Pacific Northwest. A loan guarantee and grant made by the Meyer Memorial Trust, has helped the Community Action Team (CAT) financer the repair of over 140 homes. We interviewed Jim Tierney, deputy director of CAT and head of the community investment program, about the investment.
