Building Tools for Effective Philanthropy

January 2010 Newsletter
Greetings!

The devastation in Haiti has prompted an array of philanthropic actions directed toward immediate relief. Finding effective ways to rebuild will be an ongoing challenge. This will be top of mind as foundations gather in New Orleans in March at the Katrina@5 conference to reflect on recovery efforts five years after the storm. In the wake of the earthquake, such discussions could not be more timely.

The Foundation Center's newest edition of the PRI Directory reports growing use of PRIs among small to mid-sized foundations as well as a wide spectrum of issues that they are being used to address, from housing and education to sustainable fisheries and agriculture. The Directory captures trends from 1998 through 2007, and catalogues the activities of 415 foundations. As a benefit of membership, all PRI Makers Network members will be mailed a copy of The Directory.

Network Co-Chair Jeff Clarke reports on recent conversations among West Coast PRI makers on the Rasmuson Foundation blog and Facebook page. These exchanges will be expanded on at the PRI Makers Network conference in May, which will feature workshops on PRI fundamentals and craft, emerging areas of investment, conversations about critical issues, and tours of PRI-supported community renewal projects. Register now to be a part of this important national dialogue.
