Building Tools for Effective Philanthropy
 August 2009 Newsletter
Greetings!

In spite of emerging signs of economic recovery, access to credit continues to be severely limited -- particularly for low-income communities and organizations working for social change. Fortunately, PRI's can serve as a lifeline for people and communities hardest hit by the recession. The stories below highlight three ways foundations are addressing community needs.

Good news inspires greater action. Send us information about your investments (and opportunities for others to invest) and we will spread the word.

  • The Kresge Foundation created the Community Relief Fund to help Human Service agencies responding to economic crisis. The 24- to 36-month, interest-free program-related investment fund will offer bridge loans of $250,000 to $500,000 each to high-performance human service organizations to help them to better meet increasing demands for food, shelter, and other emergency services.
  • The Seattle Foundation announced a $1 million program-related investment in the National Development Council (NDC) to help create an $8 million revolving loan fund, supporting economic development and job retention and creation. The Grow Seattle-King County Fund is part of the Seattle Foundation's strategy to increase the financial viability and stability of businesses in low-income neighborhoods. The Seattle Foundation's investment in the fund reflects its commitment to using its assets in new ways to advance programs and causes it may have previously supported only with philanthropic grants.
  • With the backing from the F.B. Heron Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, ShoreBank created the Capacity Plus Loan Program to help nonprofit organizations access affordable credit. The fund allows foundations to secure bank loans to qualified nonprofit orgniazations via FDIC-insured CD deposits, or guarantee loans without moving cash assets. [Financial lifeline bolsters ailing charities, Chicago Tribune, July 20, 2009].

What's New at the Network:
 Welcome New Members!

Please join us in welcoming the following new members to our Network:

  • Steering Committee Changes

Jeff Clarke (Rasmuson Foundation) joined Christa Velasquez (Annie E. Casey Foundation) and Mary Anne Rodgers (Packard Foundation) as co-chair of the Network's Steering Committee. He replaces Doug Stam (Meyer Memorial Trust), who will continue to serve on the committee.  Thank you to our departing steering committee members, Mary Mountcastle (Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation) and Luther Ragin, Jr., (F.B. Heron Foundation). We are grateful for your service and contributions to the Network!
    Member Survey Results Are In

Thank you to everyone who completed our recent membership survey. Your input helps us focus our efforts and provide you with the connections, information, and training you need to have the best PRI program possible.

    Survey responses show that members:
    • Find the opportunity to connect with peers most valuable, followed by opportunities to collaborate and assistance with measuring the impact of their PRIs.
    • Want the Network to help raise the visibility of PRIs, as well as help identify investment opportunities and resources.
    • Want to attend events in their communities, and 20 member organizations are willing to host such an event.
In the months ahead, the Network will put this feedback to work as we plan our events and activities. We hosted an informal lunch for Seattle members on August 6, and are planning networking events in Boston and San Francisco this fall.
