Message from the Director

What do you care about?

One of the most rewarding realities of working with and for CALC is that we get to roll up our sleeves and put our actions where our values are-we are privileged and motivated to work on the things that we most care about as individuals, as a community and as an organization.

The Occupy Wall Street movement has had an impact on communities all over our nation-putting pressure on governments, activists and individuals to bring the focus back to the issues we say we all care about. Here in Lane County, it has brought the realities, struggles and challenges of the "unhoused" or homeless to the forefront and CALC has been right in the middle of this major social justice issue.

As we move into 2012, we are stepping up our involvement in what has been a core CALC issue for decades: the human right to shelter. Michael Carrigan is an outspoken and strategic member of the newly formed Eugene City Task Force on Homelessness and we are increasing our organizing efforts to mobilize, educate and promote new and creative solutions to this overwhelming community problem.

Of course, this is in addition to our ongoing work to promote public policies and social change based on social, racial and economic justice. We are still, and will always be, CALC-but we challenge ourselves to be relevant, effective and powerful in creating and supporting movements that promote real change.

I urge you to get more involved and continue to put your actions where your values are!

Kori Rodley

Executive Director

Human Rights

SAfER: Now you see us, now you don't....

This newsletter opens with activities honoring the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., especially the MLK, Jr. celebration in Springfield, where SAfER has been involved for 14 years. Events - we sponsor several each year - are great for bringing the community together and lifting up new, young leadership. Yet events really just add exclamation points to the quiet narrative of SAfER's ongoing work. Our central narrative is collaboration for human rights. Our consistent role is encouraging institutional partners to stretch a little more in the direction of equity. In coming months, we'll be encouraging the school district to develop a more effective approach for increasing staff diversity, and we'll be asking administrators to design a response protocol for addressing adverse reaction when (not if, when) employees come "out" or are "outed." We'll meet with the City of Springfield about steps the City is taking toward a more inclusive culture within the City organization, and we'll work with them to expand legal overnight parking options for people who are homeless. This isn't splashy work, but it makes a difference - and so SAfER moves forward in our three key work areas: racial justice and immigrant rights; LGBTQ rights, and the right to shelter.

Truth in Recruiting

Peace if Free

SCHOOL IS NOT

For 9 years Truth In Recruiting has been present and working in Lane County high schools to provide a second opinion for youth who are considering enlisting in the military. We realized last year that this was not enough, that we needed to do more. That "more" turned into 5 Peace Scholarships given to Lane County high school seniors because of the generosity of individual or organization donations in support of this project.. This year we want that "more" to be even more and hope to offer 8 scholarships to Lane County seniors. This is where you, CALC's committed supporters, come in. A financial donation-over and above what you would otherwise give to CALC- designated for this project will assist high school seniors, otherwise vulnerable to the military recruiting machine, to reach their goal of attaining post high school education.

If you're as concerned as we are about truth in recruiting we'd love to have your support.  Please think about volunteering with us or donating to our TIR Peace Scholarship Fund this year.  For more information, call CALC at 541-485-1755 or email Carol

Actions for Peaceful Tomorrows:  Progressive Responses

Where Peace and Justice Intersect

Last June at CALC's urging the Eugene City Council passed a resolution that called on Congress to stop funding the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and instead use the funds to meet pressing domestic needs here in Eugene. One of the most pressing needs is taking care of the unhoused in our community.  We could better meet these needs if we even had even one percent of the $358 million Eugene taxpayers have paid to support the Iraq/Afghanistan wars.

Michael Carrigan, CALC Program Manger, has been actively involved in Occupy Eugene and helping push the city of Eugene to do more and spend more to help the unhoused in our community. He was appointed to the City's homeless task force and we are hopeful the task force will take real action to help the unhoused.

Actions for Peaceful Tomorrows:  Progressive Responses (APT-PR) will continue to take action to end the Afghanistan war but will also take action to help those impacted by war - veterans with PTSD who are living on the streets of Eugene.  There were a significant number of veterans residing at the Occupy Eugene camp.

CALC is taking part in the St Vincent De Paul's dispersed camping program and we have two veterans now camped in CALCs back yard.

If your business or home could host a homeless camper, please contact the St. Vincent de Paul Service Station.  The success of the program is dependent on community support!

An interactive workshop for social justice activists.  We will look at where racism comes from and how it operates, as well as the process of overcoming it, in ourselves and the community. Expect uncomfortable moments but also expect to leave energized, with a clearer understanding of what it means to be an ally.
Leaders Guadalupe Quinn and Marion Malcolm, both members of the Back to Back Steering Committee and seasoned social justice organizers, have co-led workshops for many years.  They will be joined by guest presenter, Mo Young, also a member of the B2B Steering Committee, who will speak from her experience of growing up multiracial in Eugene and will reflect on what she, as the mother of an African American child, hopes for from the community.

Staff Picks

What are CALC staff and consultants reading, looking at online, watching at the movies and more? Here are a few things we hope will be of interest to you too.

Kori's Pick - good hair"Good Hair": This 2009 documentary is produced by and features performer Chris Rock, as a man with two young daughters, exploring notions about "good hair", as defined by American standards. The film exposes the pressures that African American women feel to conform to the mainstream definition of beauty and explores the cultural, political and economic realities of this aspect of the beauty

industry.

Thank You!
Thank you to everyone who helped CALC prosper in 2011!

A huge THANK YOU to the Pride Foundation for awarding CALC a grant to further our work to counter oppression, racism, bigotry and heterosexism in a systemic way.

Our appreciation also goes out to Roraing Rapids Pizza for hosting  our January Fundraiser, "Pizza With a Purpose".

But we never want to overlook that it takes hundreds of supporters to make CALC an agent for change in the community.  Thanks to each and every 2011 volunteer, donor and ally!
