Wrapping up an amazing and intense year...
This past year has been amazing, inspiring and intense for our small, but mighty collaboration of staff and volunteers here at CALC. We start each year with very detailed work plans, budgets, goals and objectives and, to be honest, human rights and social justice work just doesn't fall into place in terms of work plans and budgets! Working with all the blossoming activists involved with Occupy Eugene and providing targeted and comprehensive education and response around hate activity and White supremist activities in and around Eugene/Springfield became important work areas for us that were not a part of the anticipated. As a determined, flexible and powerful alliance, CALC has been there encouraging solutions on the right to shelter, economic justice and equality issues countywide during 2011.
Anyone who spends a few hours around a handful of CALC-ers comes away amazed at how much we can accomplish with our concentrated and comprehensive focus on human rights and social justice. In my nearly two years here, I have nothing but pride and appreciation for the board, staff, volunteers and collaborators who keep moving the struggle forward. We are looking forward to even more growth as we reach out into the rural areas of Lane County and increase our strategic efforts to improve lives in 2011 and we hope you will support us-with your time, encouragement and financial contribution. We live in a world that needs CALC more than ever! - Kori Rodley, Executive Director

CALC's Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect exists to advance human rights in three key areas: the right to shelter, LGBTQ rights, and immigrant rights/racial justice. Our work continues in all areas.
For this newsletter, we focus on immigrant rights, and we highlight our involvement with the Egan Warming Center in Springfield.
The Egan Warming Centers provide a safe and warm environment for homeless people to stay the night when weather hovers around freezing. It's the least we can do for our most vulnerable neighbors. We've had multiple activations already this season. Interested in volunteering? The next volunteer training is December 10th, 9 am- noon, First Christian Church, 12th and Oak, Eugene. Trained volunteers can serve at any site. Please see eganwarmingcenter.com for more information.

Integrating Immigrants: A Statement of Principles to Sign
Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect urges CALC's friends to support an exciting new initiative supporting immigrant rights! A Statement of Principles has been developed by the Lane County Network for Immigrant Integration. This group includes representatives from about thirty local organizations. Two CALC programs, SAfER and Back to Back, are now participating.
The Statement of Principles speaks to:
- Inclusion and Integration
- Recognizing the Contributions of Immigrants
- Supporting Immigrant Families
- Promoting Respect and Non-discrimination
- Affirming a Common Sense Approach to Public Safety
- Advancing Humane and Just National Comprehensive Immigration Reform
The Statement of Principles will serve as a vehicle for raising awareness about immigration issues and building a broad base of support for immigrant justice.
The Network seeks both organizational and individual endorsers Click here to view the full statement and sign it. CALC is collecting these electronic signatues of support and will forward them to organizers.
Please also consider taking it to your group, union, or congregation and getting their support. Here is a link to a PDF of the document. You may then mail it to CALC at 458 Blair Blvd, Eugene OR, 97402

Truth In Recruiting focuses primarily on reaching high school students to counter the militarization of youth. We have an uphill battle against the impact of the highly popular and seductive military computer games, which portray killing and blowing things up--- and have an "off" button, unlike the reality of combat. "Off" button or not, they succeed at instilling a notion that normal people actually do these excitingly portrayed actions.
However, we mainly focus on what happens in schools and how the recruiters try to achieve their goal of "owning the school" as the Army recruiter handbook describes. Some recent examples in Lane County high schools of how recruiters try to "own the school" include: leading PE classes, providing lunch for all staff and getting themselves included as an Aspire volunteer. Aspire is a program in most local high schools where community volunteers help seniors complete their post high school career plans.
Please let us know if you hear of any ways that military recruiters "own your school" as we generally are successful at getting such things stopped once we learn about them. And please complain to school administrators so that we all work to decrease the militarization of youth.

Merkley Pushing Quicker End to Afghan War
The U.S. Senate voted Wednesday, November 30 for an "expedited drawdown" of US troops from Afghanistan in an amendment to the defense authorization bill put forward by our own Sen. Jeff Merkley. The amendment requires the President to submit to Congress within 90 days a plan for withdrawing troops ahead of the administration's planned December 2014 deadline and for shifting security operations to the Afghan government. Senator Merkley understands that it makes no sense to spend three more years and who knows how many billions of dollars and U.S. lives in a doomed nation-building effort in Afghanistan. Contact Senator Merkley's D.C. office at 202-224-3753 or e-mail him, and thank him for has opposition to the Afghan war and tell him to keep it up. On a sobering note, The Senate approved an amendment that would authorize the military to jail anyone it considers a terrorism suspect - anywhere in the world, even within the United States - without charge or trial. Hopefully President Obama will veto the defense bill and demand that Congress pass a bill without the egregious amendment and with Senator Merkley's call for a quicker end to the Afghanistan war.

Back 2 Back: In Our Community |
Silver of the Back to Back program recently took part in the City Club event titled "Why occupy Eugene?" The response was resoundingly positive. Those who were in attendance were happy to take part in the dialogue.
The invitation for the event came on the behalf of the People of Color, Occupy Eugene working group, which now meets at the CALC office. The group looks to deal with issues not regularly dealt with in Occupy circles; how environmental racism affects people of color, how a disproportionate number of subprime mortgages were given to Black and Hispanic families. Please contact Silver for times of upcoming meetings.

The Social Justice Potluck Cookbook is slated to be finished by the end of 2012, but there is so much to be done before that. We will be looking out for all of your wonderful recipes, quotes, and stories relating to food and family. We are truly excited about incorporating food family and resources into the social justice dialogue!
Back to Back is also working with CAUSA on the upcoming Eugene leadership conference taking place January 24th. Please save the date! CAUSA is working to ensure access for driver's licenses to all residents of Oregon and are also urging funding restoration for Centro Latino Americano here in Eugene.
We'd love to have you participate with the Back to Back Program. Call CALC at 541-485-1755 or Silver Mogart |

What are CALC staff and consultants reading, looking at online, watching at the movies and more? Here are a few things we hope will be of interest to you too.
Stephanie's Pick: Just Seeds Artists' Cooperative
Many of us are buying gifts for the holidays, here is a way to get great gifts and fund people working to advance justice on a number of fronts. Plus, their 2012 planner is only $7.00! Check them out here.
From their website: Justseeds Artists' Cooperative is a decentralized network of 26 artists committed to making print and design work that reflects a radical social, environmental, and political stance. With members working from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, Justseeds operates both as a unified collaboration of similarly minded printmakers and as a loose collection of creative individuals with unique viewpoints and working methods. We believe in the transformative power of personal expression in concert with collective action. To this end, we produce collective portfolios, contribute graphics to grassroots struggles for justice, work collaboratively both in- and outside the co-op, build large sculptural installations in galleries, and wheatpaste on the streets - all while offering each other daily support as allies and friends.
