Don't miss the fourth annual Harvest Festival for Human Rights on
Saturday, September 24th! Enjoy terrific live music by El Mariachi Herradura de Oro, Shyp Wreak, and Twisted River, and a community atmosphere. We'll have free hot food, a produce and grocery giveaway, a clothing giveaway, art activities for kids, and information tables. All this takes place from 2-5 pm at 1175 G. St. in Springfield, on the lawn outside First Baptist Church. It's a free event.
The Harvest Festival brings people together as neighbors, and offers a helping hand to those who are struggling. Want to volunteer for this event? Call SAfER at 541-726-7377 or email Marion.
The Harvest Festival is organized by Springfield Shelter Rights Alliance (SSRA), which exists to improve conditions for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The SSRA thanks our community partners for co-sponsoring.
The SSRA is coordinated by Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect (SAfER), a CALC program.

Wow! CALC's SAfER program is doing a lot. The Harvest Festival is around the corner and we will be meeting with Springfield officials to expland legal overnight parking for homeless people in Springfield, and enhance diversity and inclusion at the City. At the school level we have a meeting set with Nancy Golden and her administrative team about next steps to increase racial justice and LGBTQ rights in schools throughout the community; and, with our Safe Schools Working Group partners, we're organizing a recognition activity for our Safe Schools Network representatives. And yes, already underway, is the planning for the 2012 MLK, Jr. contest and celebration. Call SAfER to volunteer for any of these events call 541-726-7377 or email Marion.

"Service to one's country" is an image and message the military recruiting and marketing machine promotes in urging youth to decide to enlist. All of us appreciate the "service" of National Guard members in times of domestic emergencies such as the East Coast has just endured.
What concerns us in Truth In Recruiting is how the notion of "service" is used to entice high school students to enlist, ignoring the realities of military life which in no way could be considered "service." When we talk with students in high schools we point out a variety of facts, an example being that National Guard members are more likely to be deployed to Afghanistan than to help in domestic disasters or to mentor youth as in the attached ad.
If you're as concerned as we are about truth in recruiting we'd love to have your support. Please think about volunteering with us or donating to our TIR Peace Scholarship Fund this year. For more information, call CALC at 541-485-1755 or email Carol

Progressive Responses
10 Year History |
|
CALC activists came together soon after 9/11 to formulate a "Progressive Response" to the attacks on our soil and the deaths of roughly 3000 Americans. We hoped to stop further death and suffering. Unfortunately, George W. Bush soon attacked Afghanistan and then Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of people have died as a result. The U.S. has been waging war for almost 10 years and it's time for it to end.
We have not stopped the conflicts but CALC's Progressive Responses has helped build strong Oregon opposition to endless war. A few weeks back in a meeting organized by CALC, local peace activists met with Senator Merkley. He affirmed his commitment to work to end the wars. He just returned firm a trip to Afghanistan and issued a strong statement calling on the President to end the US deployment there now.
Our work with Senator Merkley, and work with the Eugene City Council to pass a "Bring the War Dollars Home" resolution reflects 10 years of relentless and effective peace organizing by Progressive Responses and we plan to keep it up in the months and years ahead. If you've been working with us - thank you! If you'd like to join us, we'd love to have you. Call CALC at 541-485-1755 or email Michael Carrigan

Back 2 Back: In Our Community
|
The Back to Back program has had an eventful month! We started the month with the Whitaker Black Party, where the Back to Back program gave away over 200 flyers! We were also a part of the PRIDE celebration with our Youth Art Project once again! The Project this year was a button making table at the CALC booth. It was as popular as ever, with a steady stream of participants the entire time! We were glad to be an active part of the celebration, and look forward to next year's celebration! The Back to Back film series also took place in August. We had a showing of "The Celluloid Closet" on the lawn, with a huge turnout. Over twenty people participated in the movie, with dozens stopping by to learn more about the series and the program. It looks like the series will be back indoors for future showings, but there will always be room for those who wish to learn more. In the month of September we look to take an active role in the CAUSA leadership classes. We also look to move forward with our Social Justice Cookbook and workshop courses. We'd love to have you on our steering committee. Call CALC at 541-485-1755 or Silver Mogart |

What are CALC staff and consultants reading, looking at online, watching at the movies and more? Here are a few things we hope will be of interest to you too.
Jill's Pick: "Fair Game"
Want to learn more about how the Bush Administration got away with revealing the identity of a CIA agent? Want to be entertained in the process? Sean Penn and Naomi Watts do an excellent job in a film that explores the ravishes of power and its more personal side-affects.

Our gratitude to our wonderful volunteers. To Lonnie Clark for spending countless hours in our office making calls for our upcoming GALA. To Deanna Cordes for spending countless hours in our office making sure the mailing got out.
We'd also like to thank Jill Sager. It is with some bittersweetness that we announce our office manager, Jill Sager, will be leaving CALC. We congratulate her on her new job with the City of Eugene but will miss her energy, efficiency and the dynamic perspective she has brought to our office and human rights work. Fortunately, she says her brief time with us has inspired her to be a CALC supporter and she can carry her advocacy for social justice into the community. This also means that we have an opening for a part time Office Manager. See our web site for the full job description and for application instructions!
