Greetings!

This year's annual June Open House at CALC is a little special. As we continue celebrating our 45th anniversary year, we invite our friends, allies and supporters to come down to the Leslie Brockelbank Peace and Justice Center at 458 Blair Boulevard on Friday, June 24th.  As part of the Last Friday Art Walk in the Whiteaker neighborhood, we'll have ice cream, entertainment, raffle off some cool items and provide information on our current projects and programs.

The weather should be nice and the atmosphere will be festive. Work by local visual artist Erin Bucklew will be showcased and there will be music by Sol de los Andes - so join staff, board and your social justice friends around 5:30 pm on Blair Boulevard.Check out our web site for more information.

TIR: Changing Minds

Last month TIR listed the Peace Scholarship winners.  By now we have presented those awards at events in the relevant high schools,  furthering our goal to promote our message about alternatives to military enlistment.

However the most extensive activity of TIR is being present in Lane County high schools in the same way that military recruiters are, so students considering military enlistment have complete and accurate information to make informed decisions about enlisting. Our female veteran volunteers are critical for conveying just how destructive military sexual trauma is.  Our male veteran volunteers expose the dark side to the glowing images of military life in Pentagon propaganda.

Vet against War T-shirt

We were busy this past school year, talking with an estimated 1072 students, in 55 school visits and 2 career fairs.   While we at CALC are always evaluating our effectiveness, it is clear that changing the name to Truth In Recruiting and joining forces with the local chapter of Veterans for Peace has been successful and rewarding. While we wish we had hard data on our effectiveness, we do know by responses from students that we have changed many minds.

PR:Oregonians Say No to War

The push for U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan by Oregonians is making a difference.  Both Senators Merkley and Wyden signed a letter to the President that urges a "sizeable and sustained" reduction in forces from Afghanistan beginning in July. Senator Merkley posted an article on the Huffington post, "Now it's time for our troops - who have served so long and so well - to come home." (link to Huffington post in constant contact) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeff-merkley/its-time-for-our-troops-t_b_873994.html

Mayor Kitty Piercy is lead signer of a "Bring our war $$ Home" Resolution which the US Conference of Mayors will be asked to pass in late June. (http://www.codepink4peace.org/section.php?id=429)

The Eugene City Council will soon consider a resolution urging the Oregon Congressional delegation to vote against further funding of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and instead use the funds to meet pressing domestic needs.

June 28, Afghanistan speaker Matthew Hoh at Harris Hall, 7 - 9 p.m.

Thanks to all who signed the CALC peace ad in the Register Guard. You can view it on CALC's Web Page. (Click Here)

Positive side note: McGovern/Jones amendment in the House, which set a timeline for withdrawal from Afghanistan exceeded everyone's expectations and almost passed.

Back 2 Back: Celluloid Hang

The Back to Back program has been in full swing with events, education and response.

The program has responded to a number of incidences this past month, sighting a rise in hate activity. Anti-Semitic and racist graffiti have appeared in a number of places throughout our community, and CALC has taken up the call to take action.  In an effort to enhance Back to Back, we are making new connections with like minded individuals and organizations. It is through this network that we hope to have more eyes and ears on the street.

Moving forward, the Back to Back program has a fresh start with new steering committee members and exciting future projects!  Many are currently being planned including more educational outreach, a cookbook, and a monthly film series that starts Thursday June 16th at 6:30 pm.  This new film series is designed to inspire, educate about a variety of topics, and generate lively discussion.  Popcorn will be served.  Read more about the two films being shown at "Save the Date" in this newsletter.

The Back to Back program has been working on many of the issues that are important to you, and with committed partners and individuals, we can continue to do the good work!

SAfER: It's About People

SAfER

SAfER is people -- committed people who live and/or work in Springfield and who are willing to take action.  That's why, with only a very part-time CALC program consultant, SAfER gets so much done.

Just this past month, SAfER volunteers were involved in face-to-face meetings with the City Manager, the Mayor, the Chief of Police, and Springfield's County Commissioner, asking for action on inclusion and diversity, immigrant rights, much-needed funding for social services, and curtailing hate activity.  Even more helped staff Springfield sites for the Egan Warming Center last winter, and many took lead positions.  Others have worked on the Martin Luther King, Jr. or Cesar Chavez events, helped build the Safe Schools Network which now has reps in every Springfield school, and covered neighborhoods and businesses with Stop Hate materials.

Are you someone who lives or works in Springfield? Do you want to make a difference as part of a dynamic team?  Do you have friends in Springfield who should know about SAfER?  Contact us at safer1214@gmail.com or call 541-726-7377. Just think how much more we could do with added volunteers!

Save The Dates

B2B Film Series at CALC

Thursday, June 16, 6:30 p.m.

458 Blair

The first film is titled "Chavez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story". At 26 minutes, this short gives the tale of the city's purchase of more than 350 acres in old Los Angeles, destroying a whole community. Corruption, lies, politics and Baseball are all incorporated in this wonderful piece.

The next short is titled "Rumbo a Las Grandes Ligas: The Road to the Big Leagues." It details the Dominican Republic, and its influence on the United States national pastime. Baseball holds the hope and dreams of many on the small Caribbean island; this is the story of a few of them. It clocks in at 52 minutes.

Popcorn will be served and discussion will follow.  Feel free to bring a non-alcoholic beverage and please join us for this event!

Staff Picks

What are CALC staff and consultants reading, looking at online, watching at the movies and more? Here are a few things we hope will be of interest to you too.

Kori's Pick:  "Howl"  a 2010 movie starring James Franco as poet Allen Ginsberg:  "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix..."Allen Ginsberg

Weaving together graphic portrayals,
actual still photographs and actors' performances, "Howl" is simultaneously an exploration of Ginsberg as artist and individual
and a documentation of a generation's unraveling of political and social constraints. Homosexuality, rigid social stereotypes and class issues are among a few of the subjects poked at in this entertaining movie.

Silver's PIck:
"Powwow Highway."

This film is about two modern day warriors traveling to save a family member in trouble. A large corporation seeks to take advantage of the remaining mineral rights on the Cheyenne Reservation, and this is something activist and veteran Buddy Red Bow (A Martinez) will not allow. Joined by his friend Philbert (Gary Farmer), the two set off on a journey and learn about themselves and what it takes to be Native in today's world.

Thank You!
Thanks and gratitude go to Lee Deveau, Bruce Bowers and Peg Morton for hitting the streets to get names for the Register-Guard Memorial Day Ad. Special thanks to intern Dustin Stauth for entering all 830 names listed in the ad.
