Following a request by SAfER's Safe Schools Working Group, the Springfield Education Association has added specific contract language to protect LGBT teachers.
SAfER mobilized folks to ask the Springfield City Council to repudiate Councilor Ralston's anti-immigrant rhetoric. SAfER asked the Mayor to replace Ralston on the Human Services Commission. She did so.
B2B mobilized volunteers to respond to hate graffiti in the Amazon Park area in South Eugene. Several volunteers, including Mayor Kitty Piercy showed up on May 5th to send a strong statement that hate activity and hate speech are not welcome in Eugene.

Greetings!
CALC is excited to announce that we are continuing to grow. We have made some additions and changes to our staff and board as we maintain our focus on strengthening our diverse communities:
Silver Mogart has been hired as the Back to Back program organizer. Silver was previously employed with the John Kitzhaber campaign, has served on the CALC board of directors and as a volunteer with various projects.
Jill Sager is our new office manager. Jill has worked with Pacific Winds Music and was the founder and Director of Hands on Rhythm and Drum School here in Eugene.
As of April 1, Kori Rodley Irons is now the Executive Director, having served as co-director with Jorge Navarro since March of 2010. Kori is excited to continue cheering on such a fabulous team.
Our board is continuing to grow and change as well and the following board officers were elected for 2011: Remie Calalang will serve as board co-chair and treasurer, Linda Hamilton will serve as board co-chair and Cims Gillespie has been elected secretary of the board of directors.
As sad as we were to see Jorge Navarro and Russell Melia depart and to allow our outgoing board co-chair, Michael Williams, the space and time to focus on other CALC volunteer projects after having served several terms on the board, we are excited at the recent additions and the ongoing ability of CALC to change and expand to meet challenges and needs within our county.

TIR: Peace Scholarship Awards
|
|
Truth In Recruiting is pleased to announce seven winners of Peace Scholarships; each $500 scholarship provides an alternative to enlisting in the military to gain money for college. The winners are Yosajandy Caballero of Springfield High, Megan Connor of Siuslaw High, Jessika McCullough of Elmira High, Tenaya Smith of Cottage Grove High, Mark Sheridan of Churchill High and Courtney Stevens of Pleasant Hill High. Each winner is an outstanding student who is planning to continue his or her education after graduation and has a commitment to peace and social justice.
CALC could not have completed this project without the financial support of individuals from all over the County and from organizations such as Oregon Country Fair, the Springfield and the Florence Unitarian Universalist Fellowships and the Church of the Brethren. Thank you for supporting these deserving Lane County high school seniors and promoting peace.
Because of a special donor from Florence, Truth In Recruiting was able to expand this project to award a $500 Beth Medler Peace Scholarship to a post high school Florence area woman seeking to continue her education rather than enlisting in the military. That winner is Sara Yauger.

PR:Fund Human Needs Not War
|
The National Defense Authorization Act is scheduled to be on the House floor this week. There will be votes on amendments to end the war based on current legislation such as the Rep. Lee's H.R. 780, Rep. McGovern's H.R. 1735, Rep. Woolsey's H.R. 651 and Rep. Garamendi's troop withdrawal amendment. Rep. Peter DeFazio has co-sponsored Rep. Woolsey's bill and has been asked to support the others.
President Obama has scheduled Afghanistan troop withdrawals to start in July 2011 and he's being pressured to make these reductions substantial and steep. Mayor Kitty Piercy has signed on to a mayor's "Bring our war $$ Home" Resolution which calls on congress to redirect military spending to domestic priorities. The US Conference of Mayors will be asked to pass the resolution in late June. This spring, CALC will be calling on the Eugene City Council to pass a resolution urging the Oregon Congressional delegation to vote against further funding of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and instead use the funds to meet pressing domestic needs. |

Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect is moving forward in all our work areas!
1.Immigrant Rights & Racial Justice: At SAfER's request, key administrators and teachers urged legislators to support Tuition Equity. SAfER organized testimony before the Springfield City Council, asking Councilors to clarify that Councilor Ralston did not speak for the Council in his anti-immigrant rant against Centro Latino. SAfER and local Latino leaders asked Mayor Christine Lundberg to replace him on the Human Services Commission, which she did. Please thank her: mayor@springfied-or.gov.
2. LGBTQ Rights: Our Safe Schools Working Group asked the Springfield Education Association how they would support a teacher who came out, and successfully requested the SEA to add specific contract language protecting LGBT teachers and councilors.
3. Right to Shelter: The SAfER-initiated Springfield Shelter Rights Alliance plans to ask Springfield officials to expand legal parking options for homeless people. We're urging Lane County to avert disastrous cuts in social services for our most vulnerable neighbors.

What are CALC staff and consultants reading, looking at online, watching at the movies and more? We'll let you know a few things we hope will be of interest to you too.
CAROL's Pick: A National Strategic Narrative online at: http://www.wilsoncenter.org/events/docs/A%20National%20Strategic%20Narrative.pdf This 14 page, rather wonky, article outlines a new national narrative, to replace the 60 year old Security State one, that focuses on domestic prosperity and global inter-connectedness. Lots of positive alternate ideas proposed in this article by 2 active military men.
JILL's Pick: The Afghan Women's Writing Project online at: www.awwproject.orgprovides 3 online writing workshops for Afghan women who are mentored by published authors, poets, screenwriters and journalists in the U.S. Forty women living in Afghanistan currently participate in the workshop that aims to encourage women to develop their voices and share their stories, something denied during Taliban years, and not often culturally encouraged during other periods. New work is posted regularly. The hope is to enlighten readers about life in Afghanistan and open a bridge between Afghan women and the rest of the world.

Thank you to all the donors who have contributed to the Peace Scholarships. Many local individuals have made donations, as well as Florence Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, the Church of the Brethren, the Springfield Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and the Oregon Country Fair. Special thanks goes to Judy Schwartz who organized many donors in the Florence area and arranged much publicity about the scholarships CALC has been privileged to have our intern Dustin Stauth with us this Spring term. Dustin is a junior at the University of Oregon in the Family and Human Services program. Dustin came to us saying he wanted to learn everything and anything about how a grassroots nonprofit operates and we promised him we would keep him busy. His great attitude and willingness to do whatever we need has been a true gift. Dustin helped out at the April 4th Time to Break Silence event, CALC's Tax Day rally at the downtown post office and even gave a radio interview! From recycling to data entry to helping staff booths, Dustin has has fit right in to our CALC team and we will be sorry to see him go at the end of the term. .
