"Action is the
antidote to despair" - Joan Baez
It's getting harder and harder
to read the headlines these days, "Congress Votes to Fund Endless
War"; "Anti Immigrant Legislation Passed in Arizona";
"Worst Environmental Disaster in US History"; "Tea Party Rally
Attracts Thousands"; "Hate Crimes on the Rise". The economy
is in shambles. Homeless people are being assaulted and others are going
hungry. Stories of conflict, chaos and mayhem abound. The fact
is it is not easy to keep going sometimes.
A number of years ago, I was standing
looking out over the space that would be Cafe Navarro. It was snowing
outside, the dining area was empty, newly painted walls were drying,
still 2 weeks out before our opening...and we were almost out of money.
Out of the blue, my breathing became shallow, I felt a cold chill and
I began to shake. I was not at all sure what was happening...
A little time passed and I managed
to calm down. I decided to call my mother. Considering that it was her
money funding the project, it seemed like the appropriate thing to do.
I explained to her what had happened and waited for a response. There
was a moment of silence before she said, "No
te pongas chico!" "Don't get little on me now!"
The challenges facing us today could
not be greater or more overwhelming. Support CALC's Progressive Responses,
SAfER, Truth in Recruiting, and Back to Back and let's get big.
The voices of conscience must be heard over the cacophony of hate and
war. Take a stand with us against oppression, bigotry, racism and discrimination.
Send a check, donate online, become a pledger, sign up for Back to
Back, get involved! Don't get little on me now!
Sincerely,
Jorge Navarro
