OUT/LOUD  Queer Music Festival

Out/Loud is a student-driven festival for queer women's music, artists, and performers who self-identify as women and/or who self-identity as allies to queer women's music. This is the premier queer women's music festival in the Pacific Northwest. The student committee takes purposeful measures in fund raising and recruitment of artists and performers who reflect the intersecting spectrum of identities, talents and genres with queer women's music. mailto:pvasquez@uoregon.edu

"A Nakba and Apartheid that Dare Not Speak their Names"
Saturday, May 22, 7pm

An event to commemorate the 1948 ethnic cleansing of Palestine known as Al-Nakba (the catastrophe), featuring UCLA Professor of English and Comparative Literature Saree Makdisi, author of Palestine Inside Out: An Everyday Occupation.

Dr. Makdisi's address at 7 PM will be followed by a panel discussion with Palestinians who have suffered dispossession or occupation.

Films on the 1948-50 Nakba refugees and oral history interviews with Nakba survivors will be shown from 3-5 P.M.

This event will be held on Saturday, May 22, in University of Oregon's Lawrence Hall, Room 115.

Lawrence Hall is located on campus between Franklin and 13th at the north end of University St.

Regarding fasting:  this is a symbolic fast, and as such, people can

decide for themselves how long or at what level they want to participate.

For example, one could drink only water, or drink water and juice, or

drink any liquid you choose.  One could decide to forgo food for 24 hours,

or just all day until 9pm, or from sun-up to sun-down.  There are no

restrictions that you don't feel you can comply with.

Eugene/Springfield Asian Council's
25th Annual Kite Festival

Sunday, May 23, 2010.


   The Eugene/Springfield Asian Council would like to invite all to the 25th annual Asian Kite Festival at Arts & Technology Academy (formerly Jefferson Middle School) at 1650 West 22nd Street, Eugene, Oregon on Sunday, May 23, 2010. Colorful kites will take to the skies above the park beginning at 2:00 p.m. and continue until 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.

There will be performances by the Chinese American Benevolent Association (CABA) Lion Dancers, Iron Mango Orchestra, Eugene Taiko and Eugene Chinese School. Admission is free. Beginners and pros are welcome to show off their kite-flying skills. For those who arrive empty-handed, the Asian Council offers a kite making class. The cost is $3 and includes all the necessary supplies to get your kite airborne. There will also be a kite flying competition. The competition is open to all ages. Prizes will be awarded in several categories: Most Creative, Smallest, Largest, and Highest Flying. There will also be a special Most Creative prize awarded to kite class participants. In addition to the kite making class, the afternoon features an Asian kite exhibit where a number of kites representative of various Asian cultures will be on display.

The mission of the Eugene/Springfield Asian Council is to create opportunities which foster friendship and harmonious relations among all people by presenting events and activities that will stimulate a better understanding of Asian and Asian-American cultures. The Asian Council also sponsors the annual Oregon Asian Celebration.

Tribute to Oregonians Who've Died in Iraq/Afghanistan

Memorial Day weekend, May 28-31, 9am-6pm


Lane County Veterans For Peace, Chapter 159, will pay tribute to the 122 soldiers with close ties to Oregon, who've died in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.  Their goal is to increase public awareness of the human cost of war.


 Friday through Monday, 9am -6pm, the veterans will display a field of flags with the names of the soldiers who've died. Their display will be between the Ferry Street Bridge and the DeFazio Bike Bridge. All are welcome.
