Lane County Commissioners' Walk in Support of a Public Option
Monday, Nov. 2nd, 12:00pm - 3:00pm
Federal Courthouse at 408 E. 8th Ave.

Democracy for America invites you to participate in the Lane County Commissioners' "Walk in support of a Public Option"

Join fellow healthcare reform advocates this Monday as Lane County Commissioners Dwyer, Handy, Fleenor, Sorenson and friends walk from Eugene's Federal Courthouse to the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza. We'll illustrate Lane County's grassroots support of a strong Public Option and encourage Congress to pass real healthcare reform with a robust public option now. After all, healthcare reform without a strong public option is nothing more than a big insurance bailout!

Upon arrival at the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza, Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy and Lane County Commissioners will speak in support of the Public Option and DFA will encourage participants to take action expressing our gratitude to our Federal Delegation whom have gone on-record supporting the Public Option in the final healthcare bill.

Eugene Says NO to the WTO Teach-In & Celebration
Saturday, November 21
1:00-4:00 pm, U of O EMU Fir Room
6:30 to 11:30 pm, WOW Hall (291 W 8th Ave)

A community coalition of labor unions, fair trade advocates and other organizers for social and economic justice will host the "WTO 2009 Teach-In" and the "Eugene Says NO to the WTO Celebration" on Saturday, November 21, 2009.  The events are being held to alert the public to the threat posed by the new World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial being held later this year, and to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Seattle protests that shut down the WTO in 1999.

The "WTO 2009 Teach-In" will take place from 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the Fir Room of the EMU on the University of Oregon campus.  A panel of local experts will present the history of the WTO, its role in job loss, environmental destruction, forced migration and financial deregulation, as well as the Seattle protests' legacy on the right to dissent.  Panelists will also discuss what to expect from the upcoming WTO Ministerial being held in Geneva, Switzerland from November 30 to December 2, and ways for people in the Eugene/Springfield area to voice their opposition locally.  The teach-in is free and open to the public.

The teach-in will be followed later that evening by the "Eugene Says NO to the WTO Celebration" at the WOW Hall (291 W 8th Ave) from 6:30 to 11:30 pm.  The celebration will feature an early-evening screening of "This Is What Democracy Looks Like," a film about the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle.  The screening will be followed by performances by the Sugar Beets and the New Mexican Revolution.  The celebration is open to the public, with a suggested donation of $5 to $15, and no one turned away for lack of funds.

The events are sponsored by  Lane County Labor Council, University of Oregon's Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation (GTFF), Community Alliance of Lane County, Lane Peace Center, AFSCME Local 3214, Latin America Solidarity Committee, Eugene Springfield Solidarity Network, Jobs with Justice, Cascadia Rising Tide, International Socialist Organization, Civil Liberties Defense Center, ACLU Oregon, and the Oregon Fair Trade Campaign.
