CALC
Greetings!
STAND UP FOR STRONG POLICE OVERSIGHT IN EUGENE

On Monday, October 26, two meetings will impact the police oversight system in Eugene. Each begins with a public forum for comments; each warrants e-mails in advance. Outcomes supporting a strong oversight system face an uphill battle. Please share your concerns before it's too late.

Eugene City Council action on appointments to Civilian Review Board, Monday, October 26, 7:30 PM, Council Chambers, 777 Pearl St.  Sign up to comment by 7:30.

Appointments to boards and commissions are the main agenda items after the 7:30 public forum. CALC is urging the appointment of people to the Civilian Review Board who take their review responsibilities seriously enough not to just agree with police recommendations.  The two most outspoken, independent CRB members, Kate Wilkinson and Rick Brissenden, fall in that category.

Wilkinson, an attorney, and Brissenden, a municipal court judge in Cottage Grove and Florence, have served on the board since it was created in 2007.  It appears a majority will vote for Wilkinson, but Brissenden's appointment is in doubt.

Along with Wilkinson, Brissenden was one of only two CRB members critical of the police tasering of environmental protester Ian Van Ornum. At this time, only Councilors Betty Taylor and George Brown support Brissenden's appointment.

So we need a strong show of public support for their reappointment to the Civilian Review Board. Mayor Piercy supports these reappointments. See links below for more information.
