Israeli Peace Activist Gila Svirsky to Visit Oregon.
Israeli writer and peace activist Gila Svirsky is arriving in Oregon on Sept. 25th and will travel throughout the state, educating about peace efforts occurring in Palestine/Israel and informing Oregonians what they can do to effectively pressure our government to promote those efforts.
Hopeful about the current presidential administration, Svirsky is calling upon President Obama to tell Netanhyahu, "Occupation is not compatible with peace. Settlements are not compatible with a two-state solution." Svirsky has headed Israel's major peace and human rights organizations. In 2000, she co-founded and led the Coalition of Women for Peace, which brings together nine Israeli women's peace organizations, raising the visibility and volume of the feminist peace movement in Israel.
Svirsky has been an activist with Women in Black since its inception in 1988, helping grow the movement into a network of vigils spanning the globe. She is currently chair of B'Tselem, Israel's foremost human rights organization in the Occupied Territories. Svirsky's Oregon appearance is sponsored by Oregon WAND, and co-sponsored by CALC's Progressive Responses and many other peace and faith organizations.
