"As a leader in the community I feel it's my duty to publicly acknowledge this wonderful exhibit which demonstrates what a truly unique and special community Lane County is," said Lane County Commissioner Rob Handy. "I applaud the work of CALC and the individuals featured in the [Shared Community - Mixed Identities] exhibit in the endeavor to educate our fellow community members about the importance of acceptance and respect for diversity."

Greetings!

Michael and Linda Close UpIt has been nearly a year since our last newsletter, and a lot has been happening on the peace and justice front in Lane County. We are hoping to bring you an online newsletter every two months, to keep everyone current on what's going on and how you can continue to help CALC "...educate and mobilize for peace, human dignity and social, racial and economic justice." Below is a thumbnail sketch of what we have done the past year with much more coming up.

On the local front, Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect (SAfER)  was instrumental in forming the new Springfield Shelter Rights Alliance which puts the issue of homelessness in a human rights framework, while working on issues such as initiating emergency shelters for severe weather and sponsoring Springfield's Human Rights Harvest.  SAfER continues organizing for the annual Cesar Chavez commemoration and the Springfield MLK student contest and celebration.

Our Back2Back program is now circulating all three of its photo exhibits, including the new  "Shared Community/Mixed Identities" display, which illustrate the many different ways we fit together and the different identities and communities we share within our larger community. Back2Back is also bringing to the forefront issues of LGBTQ homeless youth and responding to hate activity.

The Committee for Countering Military Recruitment continues to provide high school students accurate alternative information about enlistment and military life.

Progressive Responses has organized rallies and marches, meetings with legislators, letter and phone campaigns, and a signature ad, all working towards peace in Iraq, Gaza, Afghanistan, and worldwide. Last fall and this spring, they continued the series on "Peoples Agenda for A New America," focusing primarily on global climate change and new approaches for Afghanistan, while touching on policy issues such as Pakistan, NAFTA and Israel-Palestine.

This is our first newsletter as co-chairs of CALC and we wanted to show you why CALC's work is so important to us. No one person can do all this, but CALC provides the opportunity for each of us to contribute, in some way, to a broad range of activity that builds a better community. We thank you for your support in the past, and hope these newsletters will forge a closer link between us in working for our future.

Good Cheer, Art, Music, Food and More at CALC'S Open House
Get to know us, our neighbors, and our supporters at our annual Open House with art, music, food, friends and fun on Friday, June 26, 5 to 7pm, at CALC, 458 Blair Blvd, Eugene.
Open House

Last year our Open House was a smashing success featuring art from the Street Youth Art Project. This year, we hope to see even more familiar and new faces as we showcase CALC's latest photo exhibit, "Shared Community/Mixed Identities" and the short film César Chávez ˇPresente!  Shared Community/Mixed Identities is the third exhibit produced by our Back-to-Back program. It has portraits and mini-biographies of Lane County residents whose heritage is racially or ethnically mixed. It's part of CALC's ongoing effort to encourage acceptance and validation of diverse identities and contribute to building a community in which everyone feels safe, valued and respected. The film César Chávez ˇPresente! was produced by Moving Image Productions for SAfER. It features local youth and community members speaking the words of César Chávez, with images from the farm worker movement.

We'll also have great live music with the Latin Jazz group Sahmi and refreshments provided by Emerald Valley Kitchen and other local businesses. The event is part of the Last Friday ArtWalk, a coming together of Whiteaker neighborhood artists, galleries, organizations, and businesses, to showcase neighborhood creativity and liveability. We'll hope you'll also visit lots of our neighbors. So come out on a summer night for a good time and support CALC and our community. The event is free (but we love donations).

Back to Back: Allies for Human Dignity is busy working for social justice in our community.
Our newest photo exhibit is "Shared Community/Mixed Identities," which addresses the mixed-race/multi-ethnic experience of people in Lane County.  The exhibit is open to the public throughout June at the Lane County Public Service Building, 125 E. 8th Ave., Eugene.

"Shared Community - Mixed Identities" went up briefly at Meadowlark Elementary school, but parental concerns over language used in the captions, specifically of a trans and queer-identified photo subject, resulted in the exhibit's removal from the school - for the time being.
Exhibit

While parents and community members have been disappointed the exhibit was taken down for now, we at Back to Back have been encouraged at the school district's interest in better preparing teachers, administrators, and any interested parents, by learning more about transgender topics and queer identity before the exhibit goes back up in the fall.

That's a good thing.

Back to Back is now working in partnership with 4J and Lane Educational Services District to prepare the exhibit to circulate through elementary schools next school year. We re-wrote captions to be more age-appropriate and engaging for elementary students, with no censorship of the trans and queer identity language and full backing of 4J and Lane ESD. With the help of community partners, we're compiling an extensive study guide to accompany the exhibit with talking points for teachers, a glossary, resource list, and activities teachers can use to engage K-5 students. We'll include questions like - "Can you find a picture of someone who likes the same games you like?" and "What does it mean to 'share a history?'" To book the elementary-level edition of the exhibit, contact Lane ESD. To book the general public edition or CALC's other exhibits, contact us here.

Shared Community/Mixed Identities is succeeding in spurring conversation, deeper understanding, and appreciation of the many identities of people in our communities. Please join us for "Celebration of the Heart: Embracing Diversity", a celebration of diversity honoring our GLBTQ community members" where all our exhibits can be viewed.

While we've been doing lots of work with our photo exhibit, Back to Back continues to work with the Stop Hate! campaign responding to incidents of hate activity. We'll also be at Gay Pride with the Queer Youth Art Project on August 8. Come say hello.
Committee for Countering Military Recruiters (CCMR) Making Connections
CCMR That the current economic meltdown and militarism are connected is only too clear to high school grads and unemployed adults. Military enlistment is where the so-called jobs are --"jobs" that too often mean repeated combat tours jeopardizing lives, physical and psychological health, and family life. CCMR tells youth of alternatives and accurate facts about military life, but until we end the war in Iraq and stop the one in Afghanistan, our youth are in jeopardy.
Progressive Responses (PR) keeps working for peace and justice!
PR had a well-attended Afghanistan forum and joined wiPRth allies on the Iraq war anniversary for "Day of Education and Action to End War," featuring Pakistan expert Anita Weiss. Our Memorial Day Ad with 630 names stated there is no military solution in Afghanistan and Pakistan and called on governments to address health-care, clean water, education, women's rights and other urgent needs. We've worked with 55 community organizations to keep Oregon's Nation Guard at home - half will be deployed to Iraq this year, including lobbying legislators to support HB 2556-1, ensuring the Guard's only used for a "valid Congressional enactment consistent with the Constitution of the United States of America." Come see us at Alton Baker Park for the Hiroshima/Nagasaki commemoration August 6, 2009.
SAFER Promotes Help For Homeless People
SAfER
First job loss. Then benefits run out.  Next, if you lack personal support: eviction or foreclosure.  Maybe you still have a vehicle, where your family can be together.  But you can't legally live in that vehicle anywhere in Springfield.  Now you're outside the law as well as homeless.

This explains why Springfield Shelter Rights Alliance (SSRA) wants Springfield to adopt a code amendment or variance, allowing vehicle camping for homeless families at designated sites, under a St. Vincent de Paul program.  SSRA also is on the team planning for severe weather emergency shelter, and published a resource brochure.  Visit us at our 2nd Human Rights Harvest on September 13!  SSRA is coordinated by Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect (SAfER).

Sally Sheklow of Back to Back suggests this website:  "Transgender: What Does it Mean?" This video clip features transgender activist/actress Calpernia Addams explaining in easy-to-grasp language all the basic concepts and vocabulary trans allies need to know. Very clear, concise, accurate, and informative.

Carol VanHouten, Committee for Countering Military Recruitment, and Michael Carrigan, Progressive Responses, suggest:  Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. A book that shows how an aid program works to address poverty and education of girls when it is grounded in knowledge & respect for the local people.
Thank You
