Tools For Tots
 
Tools for Tots Thursday, May 21/09; 9am - 5 pm This workshop is designed to offer practical sensory strategies to improve the ability of toddlers & young children to play and function in their daily environments. Each participant receives a complimentary handbook.
 
1.  Describe how sensations, sensory integration and sensory processing impacts behavior with everyday issues related to waking up, picky eating, getting dressed, teeth brushing, potty time, hair washing, finger nail cutting, bath time, bed time... 
2.  Explore the question, "Is it behavior or is there a sensory challenge driving the behavior?"
3.  Learn how to integrate practical sensory strategies at home, community, daycare, preschool & kindergarten, using hands on participation & viewing videos of typical tots and those with challenges.
4.  Design sensory safe spaces for tots in their homes, communities & school environments.
5.  Promote interaction and engagement among children, between children, educators & caregivers.
6.  Learn about the latest research in sensory integration and sensory processing.
Tools for Teens
 
Tools for Teens Friday, May 22/09; 9 am - 5 pm (optional "Core Body Workout" from 8:15 am - 9 am) This workshop focuses on children ages 11 through 19 years. Participants will receive a 4-foot  exercise band, 3 juggling balls and a complimentary handbook.
 
1.  Learn about the pre-teen & teen brain and why teens may make irresponsible choices or why some teens seek the "sensory high" obtained from thrill seeking behavior, including drugs.
2.  Review the teen survey and discuss how teen sensory preferences challenge their occupational performance in school and at home.
3.  Discuss the "Disconnect" and "Digital" kids.
Describe critical aspects of the teen brain and sleep.
4.  Discuss how to design sensory safe spaces for teens.
5.  Identify alternative healthy and age- appropriate sensory strategies and "tools" to assist teens to participate in age appropriate activities. 
Sensory Processing Measure
 
SPM Saturday, May 23/09 
9 am - 5 pm
Bring your educational and/or therapy team to this workshop to learn how to use the SPM to assist in identifying the growing number of children who present with sensory processing difficulties. The SPM is a standardized assessment which uses a collaborative team approach to identify sensory processing difficulties in children ages 5-12 twelve years. Participants will receive a home, school & gym sample form to use in the workshop.
 
1.  Review of the research behind the development of this norm referenced standardized tool.
2.  Discuss principles of use to support identifying and treating sensory integration/processing difficulties, including praxis/motor planning.
3.  Administer and score the SPM.
4.  Discuss case studies using the SPM.
5.  Use the SPM in multiple environments, encouraging collaboration among parents, schools and clinics/therapists.
6.  Answer the question, "Are sensory issues driving the behavior?"
