This Issue's Feature: Winter Adventures to Discover

Snowmobiling in Portage CountyOld Man Winter is giving the Stevens Point Area plenty of winter adventures to discover. With more than 300 miles of snowmobile trails to explore with plenty of stops in between, you will be sure to find the cure for cabin fever.

Start by planning a trip to stay at the Comfort Inn, AmericInn or Elizabeth Inn in Plover, all with easy access to the trails. Heading to the west, plan a stop for lunch at Club Forest Bar. Club Forest Bar, established in 1927 is known for it's friendly atmosphere and their specialty ½ pound char-grilled burgers. Of course, if you stop, be sure to bring your room key along for a special buy-one, get-one offer.

Continue on the trail heading west and south to explore the southern parts of Portage County, through Bancroft and Almond and then head north to Amherst. Here, the trail overlaps with the Tomorrow River State Trail, a 18-mile trail that offers additional recreational opportunities during the winter, like dog-sledding and cross-country skiing. In the off-season from Old Man Winter, the trail is used as a hiking, biking and horseback riding trail. As you continue north, take in the scenery as you head towards River's Edge for dinner. A great spot for a traditional Wisconsin fish fry, or on Saturday night, a classic prime rib dinner.

Winter along the Green Circle Trail, in Stevens Point, WisconsinIf you'd rather enjoy the snow at a slower pace, try cross-country skiing. Groomed trails can be found on the Green Circle Trail, on the Plover River Section. Parking is easily accessible. Additional groomed cross-country skiing trails are available at Standing Rocks County Park. Just a few miles from Standing Rocks County Park, you will find the Wild West Campground & Corral. They offer traditional horse-drawn sleigh rides on the weekend, complete with a roaring fire and hot cocoa to warm you up.

For a bit more speed, try Downhill skiing available at Standing Rocks Park. With five runs, two beginner, one intermediate and two expert runs, it is a great way to spend your afternoon. They offer equipment rental and are open every weekend when weather permits. Contact the Standing Rocks Park Office for conditions and additional information, 715-824-3949.

Sledding in Iverson Park, in Stevens Point, WisconsinMore speed can be found in Iverson Park, in Stevens Point, with Toboggan and Sledding hills. A warming house is on-site and available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays while weather permits.

Snowshoeing can be done along other Green Circle Trail sections, and in the Schmeeckle Tobogganing in Iverson Park, in Stevens Point, WisconsinReserve. The Schmeeckle Reserve Visitors Center is open seven days a week, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and serves as the headquarters to the Green Circle Trail. They have plenty of trail information, in addition to being home to the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame.

If you don't have your own, snowshoes and skis are available for rent from the Nature Treks, by calling 715-341-7149. For detailed information on snow conditions click here or call the Portage County Snowmobile Trails Hot-line at 715-343-6277.

Of course, if you'd rather spend some time inside somewhere warm, visit the Wellness Spa for a hot stone massage or another service sure to leave you relaxed and enjoying the Wisconsin winter.

And if that just isn't enough cold white stuff, remember Belt's, home of the large cone, will be opening in March!
