October Feature: Colorful Adventures

Go! Many
of the rural areas in Portage
County offer spectacular
viewing of the fall colors. To experience the best that the area has to offer by car,
try taking Old Wausau Road north
to Casimir Road.
Then, take Second Drive North as it winds through to Highway X.
Continue north on Highway X to Highway DB. Continuing west on Highway DB, you will notice the beautiful color
surrounding the water of Lake
DuBay as you drive over
the many bridges here. Continue on Highway DB (the Old Highway 51) and turn on Seagull Drive in
Knowlton. Pass Mullins Cheese and continue your ride on Highway 34/E to the
left, as it slowly moves you past Lake
DuBay County
Park and along the river back towards Stevens Point (connecting
with Highway HH West). For more detailed route suggestions contact the Stevens Point Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.
To
experience more history on your journey try following the Polish Heritage Trail. Linking many of the communities within Portage County,
follow part, or all, of the segments. The route highlights the first rural Polish
settlement in Wisconsin, second in the United States.
Along the way, on quiet rural roads you will be reminded of the strong Polish
roots in the area, still evident today.
Other historical routes through the area are the Yellowstone Trail, a
road that stretched from Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound, and Highway 51, a road
that links the Northwood's of Wisconsin to
southern Louisiana.
See! The
fall color may be best enjoyed at a slower pace on one of the many
trails in the area. Leisurely follow the Green Circle Trail, a 30.5 mile trail
that circles the city winding along the Wisconsin River,
Little Plover River and other tributaries. For some of the best views, try the
Riverfront Section (starting at Pfiffner
Pioneer Park
heading north) or the Plover River Section (parking is available just off of Highway 66
East, just past the airport). The Tomorrow River State Trail, a 14-mile trail
that runs from Plover to Amherst Junction on an abandoned railroad bed allows
hikers, bicyclists, joggers and horseback riders on it's route. But, don't forget about the Schmeeckle Reserve. They are
offering a unique way to view a segment of the five-miles of trails on the reserve by offering a one-mile hike,
illuminated by jack-o-lanterns and torches, through the autumn woods on October
30th.
Standing Rocks County Park, Ice Age Trail and the
George W. Mead Wildlife Area in the county also offer wonderful views of fall
foliage and opportunities to see other wildlife.
Do!
 Get
out and enjoy the art of fall in Central Wisconsin, hosted among the meadows,
woods, and rolling countryside of Central Wisconsin.
The Hidden Studios Tour: Art Along the Ice Age Trail,
October 2-4, 2009, is a weekend full of opportunities for people to visit the
art studios tucked along the nooks and crannies of the Ice Age Trail, watch the
artist craft their work, and purchase art if they like. Or view the artful side
of renewable energy on the Wisconsin Solar Tour, with the Midwest Renewable
Energy Association, October 2-3.
Every
weekend in October get out to enjoy the brisk fall weather at one of the many
seasonal favorites. Altenburg's Country Gardens, celebrating it's 45th
year, has hayrides, two corn mazes, spook house, free parachute candy drop and
more. Be sure to take a ride out into the pumpkin patch to pick out your favorite.
Or, stop the 3rd Annual Corn Maze, which offers weekly special events, including a moon lit maze, haunted
maze and petting zoo. For something a bit spookier, try the Rising Star Mill Haunted Mill, Thursday-Saturday, October 29-31, which offers a family friendly time (5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.), by
keeping the lights on with no live creatures. The full 'scare' effects begin at
6:30 p.m.
Many
other cultural and arts events will be occurring all month long. For a complete
