Greetings!
May is the perfect opportunity to bring history and heritage to life in Portage County. With hands-on activities, exhibits, displays and events - it is not your typical history lesson. |
May Feature: Historic Portage County
GO! Get out to explore the history of cultures in central Wisconsin, by attending the Portage County Cultural Festival, May 2. The festival
offers hands on activities, arts & crafts, food, children's activities, entertainment and more. If you are still interested in discovering other cultures, make your way to the AIRO Pow-Wow, May 2, to see the rich heritage of the Native American cultures in Wisconsin. Continue by exploring the annual Amherst Quilt, Craft & Amish Furniture Auction (shown), May 16, where more than 500 handmade quilts will be on display.
SEE! Explore the historic districts throughout Portage County. Stroll down the quaint Main Street in Downtown Amherst, which runs along the Tomorrow River. Explore Old Times Sake & Heartstone Antiques to see a unique assortment of antiques, including a large historic postcard collection. Then, visit the historic murals (the Market Day Mural is shown) in downtown Stevens Point. The murals decorate buildings and pay tribute to the heritage of the area. Another tribute that can't be missed is the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame, located in the Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center. Explore Wisconsin's environmental history and honor those who a have lead the state's conservation and environmental movement. STAY! Enhance your visit in Portage County, by staying in a historic bed & breakfast. The Amherst Inn Bed & Breakfast, built in 1887, is a beautifully maintained Victorian Gothic home located in the heart of Amherst, nicknamed the Painted Lady. This is a perfect location to spend the night after the Amherst Quilt, Craft & Amish Furniture Auction. Or, visit Dreams of Yesteryear Bed & Breakfast, the 1901 Queen Anne Victorian home near downtown Stevens Point, which is listed on the National Historic Register. This is a perfect stop along the way for the Inn-to-Inn Hiking Package along the glacial formations of the Ice Age Trail through Portage County. The Victorian Swan on Water, (shown at left) offering specials the first weekend in May, is a beautiful 1889 Victorian home with an interesting history. With the extraordinary specialty breakfasts, you'll be proud to call them your home away from home. For more information about other bed & breakfasts in Portage County click here. DO! Discover the roots of Portage County first hand by visiting historical sites throughout the county. Visit Heritage Park (the restored Train Depot is shown), a village of historical buildings from the county's past, and the Beth Israel Synagogue, housing a permanent display of local Jewish artifacts. Both museums open for the season on Memorial Day Weekend, from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. If you're looking for more history visit the Museum of Natural History on the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point campus, to interact with the natural world. A weekend full of hands-on activities to teach and expand your skills. Still interested in fish? Plan a side trip to the Red Mill Supper Club, a traditional Wisconsin supper club.
