Spring Featured Getaway: Exploring the Arts in Portage County
April is ArtsMonth, here in Portage County. This is a great excuse to get out and explore the many unique arts attractions and events.

Make your way to Jazz Night, Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra's annual event, featuring Janet Planet on April 4. Or, take in some theater with the UW-Stevens Point Department of Theater and Dance performance of "She Loves Me", April 10-12 and April 15-18. Then, explore ArtsWalk, featuring local visual and performing artists in specialty shops throughout downtown Stevens Point on Friday, April 17. On April 28, visit the @1800 Theater presenting the Hot Club of San Francisco: Silent Surrealism, silent surrealist films with live gypsy jazz. (For tickets call 800-838-3378.)

Then, explore the many galleries throughout the area. Each has a unique feel. In Amherst, the Tomorrow River Gallery will be opening for the season on April 17 with original art from more than 25 local artists. The Riverfront Arts Center, will be opening it's next exhibit on April 24, featuring paper. The Carlsten Art Gallery, at the UW-Stevens Point is currently exhibiting a work called, "The Celestial World: The Work of Martha Glowacki, Karen Hamner and William Laven", on display until April 26. Gather a different perspective at the Scarabocchio Art Museum, where distinct art was developed by Dr. David Smith. For a more traditional art experience visit the @1800 Art Gallery. @1800 includes a permanent exhibit including original works of Picasso, Dali, Chagall and more as well as a rotating exhibit.

April also marks Fine Arts Month at the Central Wisconsin Children's Museum. Take the kids and get your hands dirty in their art room. For more hands-on time, visit the Art Village. Paint your own pottery, create a mosaic or explore their own gallery space.

Reasons to Flock Here: Prairie Chicken Festival
Think you know chickens? Well, in central Wisconsin we celebrate them. April 17-19, is an entire festival dedicated to the birds and the grasslands where they live. The Central Wisconsin Prairie Chicken Festival, a Celebration of Grassland Conservation for Birders & Bookies, will show why the area is the region's top wildlife watching destination in the country. |
Contests for $800, Alex?
What is the World's Largest Trivia Contest, hosted April 17-19, by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, WWSP-90FM. Nearly 500 teams compete in the 54-hour event. It kicks off on Friday at 4pm with a parade. Join in the fun here.
