Vedanta Resources in the firing line of investors

The Indian metals and mining company Vedanta Resources has been in the spotlight lately. The Indian Ministry of Environment and Forest rejected Vedanta's planned bauxite mining project in the Orissa region because of its negative environmental, social and cultural impacts. As a result the company's share price dropped by 10 per cent. Moreover, a group of UK pension funds publicly criticized the company for not listening to its shareholders' ESG concerns. To know more about Vedanta's profile and controversies, please contact Sustainalytics' Global Compact team at [email protected]

Investors Put Gender on the Agenda

On August 21, a coalition of global investors managing over US$ 73 billion of assets called on companies across the world to increase representation of qualified women on boards of directors and in senior management. The investors are responding to a survey of 4,200 global companies that found only 9.4 per cent of directors on corporate boards were women. This is despite numerous studies suggesting that companies with more women in senior management have superior financial performance or higher earnings.
