Greetings!,

The 20th annual "Taste & Tasteless" - Friday, April 27th!  Don't miss this opportunity to have a great evening and to also help support the Poncan Theatre with their annual fundraising event.  Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at the theatre office, Eastman National Bank, RCB Bank, the Chamber of Commerce, or from volunteer board members, or you can purchase tickets online!

This event is possible because of the many volunteers and businesses that come together to help support the historic theatre.  This year continues the vision of JoAnn Muchmore to get people involved and to help support the Poncan.  If you have ever seen the show, you know that no one has ever been turned away due to a lack of talent!  And as JoAnn would have said, you don't have to do something well, but just do something!  So this year, please purchase a ticket to honor all the citizens who have worked to keep your historic theatre an important part of our city.

You have a "talented" group working diligently to script yet another unforgettable experience that is based on the events that have occurred during the past year.
Taste and Tasteless Encore
Encore for 2011 Taste & Tasteless Cast
Restaurants and businesses donate the most tasteful part of your evening, the food (at 6:00 at Hutchins), and other citizens step out of their comfort zone to tastelessly add to your evening (at 8:00 at the Poncan).  YOUR support of this event will aid the theatre with much needed funds and donations to help continue to bring
many community events to Ponca City and to help maintain an 85 year old building! Please support this important fundraising event!

See "Behind the Scenes" below to learn more about the origins of this special fundraising event!

April 14th, the second performance of the 2012 Opry Season featuring the Poncan Opry Band and special guest, Clint Walker.

The new format for the opry was well received on the opening night of the 2012 season, which included a wider variety of music for all audiences to enjoy.  Guest singer Stormy Bennet was a big hit. This month's performance features guest singer Clint Walker, who has been the opening act for Ronnie Milsap, George Jones, Hank Thompson, Jerry Reed and many others.  So if you've not been to a show, get your tickets and enjoy the traditional Classic Country music, along with Today's Country, Classic Rock 'n Roll, Rhythm 'n Blues, Bluegrass and Gospel.  Thanks again to Heartland Western Outfitters for supporting the opry this season and for providing the band with shirts tailored to each performance, and a thank you to Head Country that kept the band nourished during rehearsals and prior to the performance with their famous BBQ.  And finally a big thanks to Bill Coleman, Team Radio, and Country KPNC 100.7 FM for their continued sponsorship of the 2012 season!

BehindtheScenes
BEHIND  THE  SCENES   -  EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ...
BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK

20th Annual Taste and Tasteless Fundraising Event

In the Ponca City News article disclosing the FIRST Taste and Tasteless fundraising event in 1993,

JoAnn Muchmore, the executive director at the time, was quoted as saying "the evening will include tasteful treats and a truly disgusting show".   2012 Taste and Tasteless PosterNineteen years later not much has changed, well except for Phil Bandy, and a lot more food.   An ad in the paper was prophetic, or pathetic or whatever, indicating "Tickets are now on sale for the first (and soon to be famous) Taste and Tasteless show at the Poncan Theatre."  Little did the writer know just how true those words would resonate within the walls of the  historic Poncan Theatre for many years to come.

So who gets the blame for 19 years of hilariousness? Larry (he wouldn't give out his last name) said the board of directors came up with the idea to help spur interest in the renovations and to raise much needed funds. Well, for a non-profit in today's environment, not much has changed.  This annual event is an important means to help sustain the theatre and all the good things she does for the community.   Even with today's economy, our business community and the restaurants in our town are once again jumping right in to help.  For many, this is also their 20th year to participate.

While this year's theme was recently announced, we thought you would like to take a look at the past years' themes and you'll get an idea of the treat that is awaiting you at this year's 20th platinum Taste and Tasteless event!  And you can always count on the infamous "Lawn Chair Brigade" to get things moving down hill very quickly!

The Lawn Chair Brigade
Recognize anyone? The infamous Lawn Chair Brigade
Many folks have supported this event for the past 20 years and will enjoy reminiscing the themes of the past listed below!   In fact, if you have attended the previous 19 events, we'd sure like to recognize you and your endurance!  Also, we are missing a couple of themes, so let us know if you can fill in the blanks below for 1997 and 2005, and you will be entered for our next drawing for two opry tickets!   Just click here to pass along any information ... we'd sure like to hear from you!

REMINDER:  If you have any old photos of the Poncan Theatre that you want to share, please send them to: newsreel@poncantheatre.org
If it's a picture we've never seen before, you'll be eligible for a  drawing later this year to win 2 tickets to a future opry show.   Thanks to several of you that have already submitted your old photos!

You've always heard that a "picture is worth a thousand words"?  Well, recently we not only received an historic picture, but also the actual subject of the picture!  Long time Ponca City resident, Mary Bryant, donated a 1930's 35mm portable projector.  (For all you young folks out there, this would be the very first portable projector device that would compare to today's computers, laptops, I-Pads and even our phones)!  In a future Behind the Scenes, we will share pictures and the story behind the projector.  A big thank you to the Bryant family for their donation to the theatre!
