Moving people out of poverty...one family at a time!

What does poverty look like

 in Montgomery County?

  • Did you know that over 37% of school aged children in Montgomery County live at or close to poverty? That is compared to 25% in Texas.
  • Almost 25,000 households live on $25,000 or less.
  • There is a high school drop out every 4 minutes in Texas.
  • 75% of the Texas prison population are high school drop outs.

Your investment in Montgomery County United Way funds these solutions:

  • Project Independence - a pilot program that combines education and job training with financial literacy.  It has successfully moved people from dependence on health services to gainful employment.  Kids in these families benefit from the increased income and by seeing their parents succeed.
  • Mentoring for youth
  • Educational programs for youth
  • Early childhood education
  • After school care for children

MCUW invites you to Give, Advocate or Volunteer to:

"Move people out of poverty...one family at a time."

7th Annual Socks & Undies Drive

Kids need new socks and underwear to start back to school.

It's just as important as new school supplies.

Buy a new package of socks and underwear for children aged 5 - 12 and donate it to help a child start their school year right.

As an added bonus, Dr. Sam Faysal of Dynamic Health and Wellness in Conroe will provide a "Free Chiropractic Adjustment" (some restrictions apply).

Click here  to find drop off locations.

The drive ends August 5, 2011.

The "Socks & Undies" Drive received local television coverage.  MCUW was invited to attend the taping of the FOX 26 morning show.  Pictured: (l to r) Carla Clark, MCUW Director of Marketing and Melissa Wilson, FOX 26 Morning Show Co-anchor.

  • Sign up to volunteer.
  • Tell someone you know at a local non-profit to register their volunteer opportunities.

Advocate.

Women's Leadership Council has awarded over $29,000 to pay the daycare costs for 5 college students in the 2011 "WLC's Young Mothers Scholarships"

Women leaders are advocating for  young moms who graduated from area high schools to continue their education. When creating the program, members found that paying for quality daycare was a barrier to furthering their education after high school.

To designate your gift to the "Young Mothers Scholarships" ask your company's United Way Employee Campaign Coordinator for a designation card during this year's campaign.

For more information, contact Jennifer Adams - Burkett at 281-292-4155, ext. 267 or email jennifer@mcuw.org.

Volunteer.

CB&I's Women's Leadership Group coordinated with MCUW's Days of Caring program to benefit Montgomery County Women's Center.

Forty volunteers designed and painted artwork that the Women's Center clients could hang in the shelter.

To participate in a MCUW Days of Caring project, please contact Summer Darnell at 936-760-4179, ext. 265 or email summer@mcuw.org.
