MCUW raises

over $4.5 million

Through the generous hearts of our donors come investments in the lives of Montgomery County families and individuals.  At our recent Volunteer Appreciation Celebration,  MCUW's 2010 Campaign Chair Barry Carpenter, with the Greater Conroe Economic Development Council, announced the total raised was $4,502,071.

The success, in large part, was due to the first million dollar campaign by a local corporation and its employees.  Anadarko raised over a million dollars to support MCUW.

MCUW raises funds from individuals that participate in area work-place campaigns, corporate donations and from citizens in our area.

MCUW Invests Over $3 million

in 2011 Funded Programs and Initiatives

Montgomery County United Way's Board of Directors has approved funding for 2011 programs and initiatives that will improve lives for lasting change for residents of Montgomery County.  Over $3million will be invested in fifty-seven programs and initiatives administered by nineteen of MCUW's Funded Partners and United Way.

Ninety Four volunteers spent over 2000 combined hours      evaluating agency and program requests for funding, participating in site visits and meeting to make recommendations for funding.  These recommendations were then presented to MCUW's Community Impact Committee then forwarded to the Board of Directors for approval. 68% of the volunteers were returning Strategic Investment panel members.

Each Funded Partner applies for funding each year in a process designed to measure outcomes of performance: how clients are actually served and how their lives are improved.  Agencies apply under five priority areas that MCUW has defined through its "Community Priorities Report" to be the community's most pressing needs.

These priorities are:

#1:  Moving people out of poverty

#2:  Faciliating access to affordable & quality health care

#3:  Helping people cope with challenging situations

#4:  Preventing and treating drug/alcohol abuse

#5:  Providing temporary assistance in crisis

Because MCUW surpassed the annual fundraising goal, available dollars were up by 16.8% this year.  The board approved the funding recommendations in the May 2011 Board Meeting.

Leadership Montgomery County Class 2011

Vicky Shelledy, MCUW Director of Community Impact, shown here with Class Co-leader David Hamilton, P.E. of Binkley & Barfield, Inc. was a member of the Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2011.

The class project this year was to assist Montgomery County Food Bank with building a community garden, developing donor software and to expand the Backpack Program that now can feed over 800 kids every week that would not, without the aid of this program, have enough to eat at home.

MCUW's President Julie Martineau graduated from LMC's predecessor, Leadership Conroe in 1987 and was the founding co-chair of Leadership Montgomery County in 1998 and MCUW's Director of Fund Development, Cathy Yowell graduated in 2009.

MCUW is very proud to support and participate in this amazing Leadership Development program.  Congratulations to Vicky and the Class of 2011.

Advocate

By Julie Martineau,

MCUW President

The national and Texas economy have begun to take their toll on local non-profits, many of which rely on federal and state grants as a portion of their revenue stream.  Conversations at the two capitals have left our funded partner executives reeling from the severity of the cuts being suggested

From a macro point of view, funding that sustains and helps grow people - such as public and higher education, health and human services, Medicaid, and food stamps - are being hit the hardest.

Recommendations for our state representatives:

Be equitable in your funding cuts

Think long term

Montgomery County United Way funds and tracks effective programs - reward those and cut those who do not produce the outcomes intended.

United Way funds will not replace the cuts made by the state but will help ease some of the pain.
