Dr. Don Stockton - Over a Decade of Service to MCUW
Dr. Stockton Dr. Don Stockton, Conroe Independent School District Superintendent serves his community well by giving back. Montgomery County United Way has been the recipient of that service for over a decade. He "saw that MCUW was beneficial to the community". But when his mother started needing wheel chair accessible transportation to doctor's visits and his dad found a program funded by MCUW to help provide these trips; Dr. Stockton's view became personal.

He describes the role that MCUW plays in our community as "United Way mobilizes resources, it has a long reaching arm into our community.  It impacts the quality of life for our citizens.  I've gone from noticing the United Way NFL football ads in my youth to seeing, first hand, how United Way addresses the long term needs in Montgomery County."

After contributing to Montgomery County United Way through CISD fundraising campaigns, Dr. Stockton was asked by MCUW President Julie Martineau to serve on a committee that would ultimately produce MCUW's "Youth Yellow Pages", a resource guide for young teens to be able to connect with information on the effects of drugs, good health, safety and positive activities.  This was in response to the shooting incident in Columbine, CO.

After also serving as a member of the Strategic Investment Committee, he saw, first hand, the number of people that serve in this manner. "I was amazed, it was a great experience", he said. He was then asked to serve on a 3 year term on the MCUW Board of Directors and then was asked to repeat for a second 3 year term, which included serving as Board President for one year.

Thanks Dr. Stockton, for your tireless efforts to serve our community! To learn how to volunteer:  visit - www.mcuw.org and click on Volunteering or call 281-292-4155, ext. 235 or 936-760-4179, ext.235 Para Espanol.

Thirty Six Volunteers read to pre-k and Kindergarten classes at Armstrong Elementary, including a young man who returned to volunteer after he had attended Armstrong in his youth.  Thanks Sam Moreno (pictured above)!
MCUW was promoting the F.R.E.D. (Families Read Every Day) program which encourages families to read at home to help their children succeed in school.

According to Armstrong Principal Daniel Lopez, "the program was so successful", he asked MCUW to continue the reading program through the end of the school year.

MCUW is seeking additional volunteers to read to kids at Armstrong Elementary, located on FM 1485, right off of I-45 in Conroe.

Reading Times on Tuesdays through the end of school are:
9:15, 10:00, and 1:30 p.m.

Email:  teresa@mcuw.org if you want to read. It's fun, it's fast and it's fabulous for our youth to see positive role models.  95% of the student population is economically disadvantaged.  Share your time with a kid on a Tuesday!

Strategic Investment Committee Volunteers

The Strategic Investment Volunteer Orientation was recently held at the Conroe Activity center.

Over 100
volunteers will be responsible for making funding recommendations on programs submitted by MCUW's Funded Partners that provide long term solutions that make the greatest impact in one of MCUW's five strategic priority areas.  Programs provide direct services to those in need.

We would like to thank these dedicated volunteers who will spend approximately twenty five hours over the next 4 weeks.

That's dedication to United Way!
