This column focuses on the philosophy of naturopathic medicine, its principles and practices. My Washington experience has solidified some of my convictions about what naturopathic medicince is and does. I am inspired anew and hope I can inspire you as well. At the very core is the Vis - our innate healing ability. In a perfect world, we live, eat, move and breathe in such a way that we allow the Vis to work freely at all times. We are in tune with ourselves enough to know when and how the Vis needs our assistance AND we know how to give it that assistance. So we do and we are well. That's the perfect world. Do you live there? Me neither! But we try, right? One of the most common ways we react to the Vis' call for attention and assistance is also the most detrimental. That is suppression. When we get out of balance and aren't working exactly right, we typically notice a symptom. We're SUPPOSED to notice that symptom - it is designed to get our attention so we can make adjustments necessary to assist the Vis in restoring our body to balance and health. That usually means rest, a change in diet, stress reduction, more water or some other measure we often think of as time- consuming or inconvenient. What do we do instead? We head for the drug store or medicine cabinet for the handy pill that will suppress the annoying symptom so we can carry on with our business as usual. While this might relieve the symptom in the short term, it is detrimental in the long haul. We haven't changed anything about the underlying condition that is causing the symptom. We haven't done anything to stimulate and support our own ability to be well. That underlying cause will continue to be there and it will fester. Fester: verb, to be or become an increasing source of irritation or poisoning. (www.thefreedictionary.com). Suppression causes festering. Festering causes problems down the line. Maybe it's just your cold lasting longer than it had to. But there are more serious implications. Long term use of drugs that suppress the immune system can increase cancer risk, infection risk, liver and kidney damage. Extended use of drugs that suppress stomach acid decreases bone density and inhibits absorption of nutrients. It is a very common pattern that teens with asthma had eczema suppressed as a youngster. Over time, suppression nearly always backfires in some way. So what can be done? The naturopathic answer is that we can work to support the Vis instead of suppress it. That applies to everything from colds to asthma to high blood pressure. In our society of quick-fix, immediate gratification and convenience, this is not the first or most apparent choice. But it IS a choice that is available to you. It is not always an easy choice - it requires effort and commitment. But its long term rewards are significant.
* * * * * What is The Vis?
a) Latin word for power b) A foundation of naturopathic medicine c) Word rhyming with bees d) All of the above
The correct answer is d!
"The Vis" is, in naturopathic medical circles, short for the Latin, "Vis Medicatrix Naturae," which translates to the Healing Power of Nature. It is at the very core of naturopathic medicine and what sets it apart. The Vis is our body's own innate intelligence that strives every minute of every day to keep the body in a perfect balance of health and function. |

Greetings!
I'm finishing this newsletter up in Washington and have it scheduled to be sent on March 1st, as always. With a little luck, I'll actually be back in Michigan when it's sent! I have no control over the weather between Spokane and Midland, however, and I'm can't guarantee an easy three day drive home. Here's hoping, though, and I look forward to being back in the office sometime this week! |
2nd Tuesdays Program
Green Your Clean! March 8, 7-9 p.m.
Cleaning! For something that we see as a "chore," Americans sure have a lot of apparent interest in stuff being clean, cleaner than clean, germ-free and sterile even! Doesn't take much TV watching to see about the latest cleaning product to hit the market and it's estimated that we spend around $650 each year on cleaning supplies. Have you ever wondered how we managed to not die of germ-ridden plagues before we had these cleaning products? Have you ever wondered what's IN these new cleaning products? Have you ever had a reaction to any of them - a headache, a rash, a respiratory complaint? Have you ever wondered if there's a different way? Just in time for spring cleaning, join us at the WellSpring Studio for a look at the hows and whys of cleaning in a more green way. There will be resources and recipes and demonstration fun!

News & Notes March Schedule. We return to our regularly scheduled programming this month with Dr. Kim's return from Washington. Her hours are by appointment Monday - Thursday. The Medicinary is open to all Tuesdays from 9am - 1pm. Other Medicinary hours are available by calling ahead or by chance!
Health Fair. WellSpring will have a table at Trinity Lutheran's 1st Annual Health Fair, Sunday, March 13th from 2-5 p.m. Stop by and see us and the rest of the fair. There will be door prizes and give-aways. Trinity Lutheran is at 3701 Jefferson Avenue in Midland.Federal Health Reform. Of course, the whole health care reform issue is complicated and messy. But representatives of naturopathic medicine continue to work to be recognized and included in various parts that involve alternative or integrative practitioners. It is currently more pertinent to NDs in licensed states, but federal recognition would certainly help the cause for those of us in unlicensed states like Michigan too. Spring Cleanse Group Program
 These days, doing a "cleanse" means a lot of different things to a lot of different people and I get asked about various cleanses all the time. I've actually done a number of different ones myself. I tend to try things out on myself before I recommend them to others! What are the goals of a cleanse? Generally we are looking to get garbage out of the body, right? And hoping that in the end we'll be more energetic, lighter (not necessarily on the scale, but that's often a nice side effect), with clearer skin, brighter eyes and ready to face the world with a smile. And how do we do that? A basic program of goods things in and bad things out makes sense. Well, there are dozens of packaged programs out there making cleansing claims. I've used them with varying degrees of success - and you may have too! One of the troubles with the package programs is that the powders and shakes and bars they sell you don't teach good eating habits. Once they're gone and the cleanse time is over, we have nowhere to go but back to our bad habits that got us into the need for a cleanse in the first place. This time, let's try something new - let's try getting good stuff in using REAL FOOD!!! Let's try treatments that get bad stuff out and boost cleansing and metabolism. Let's try supporting each other as we learn how to incorporate good habits into our daily routines!
The 2011 WellSpring Cleanse - Begins April 7. We'll go back to basics with this cleanse and start with finding out what good foods are for YOU!. If you aren't able to digest a particular food well - even if it's supposedly a "healthy" food - it's going to be working against your overall health The Carroll food intolerance test will help personalize a food program for you. "Of the Month"
I have spent much of the last two months studying and practicing the finer points of constitutional hydrotherapy and would like to share it with you for our March Of the Month topic. It has been a great privilege to work with Dr. Dick in this area, as she has a pretty direct line of training from the historical developers of this amazing procedure. Indeed, in this lineage are the very foundations of naturopathic medicine. History of Hydrotherapy. There are volumes written on the history of hydrotherapy with overlapping theories and details and mentors and students with new additions and twists to the original therapies from Europe. Our focus here is primarily on the history that has resulted in our naturopathic constitutional hydrotherapy work. Certainly other work has validity and value - but we only have so much space and time! While there were a few earlier influences, the first person to really make a name for himself and hydrotherapy was Vincent Priessnitz (1799-1852). He had no formal schooling and, as a result, was given a very rough time by the medical establishment of the day. But he persevered, was tremendously successful and eventually the Austrian government not only sanctioned his practice, but gave him a gold medal for civic merit. In his career, Priessnitz treated at least 40,000 people who came from all over the world to see him. Hundreds of doctors came to work with him and learn his methods. The next important figure in naturopathic hydrotherapy is Fr. Sebastian Kneipp (1824-1897). His "Nature Cure" methods were slightly more gentle than those of Priessnitz and he added the use of herbs as well. Fr. Kneipp also treated thousands of people and was known far and wide. Two men considered foundational in the development of naturopathic medicine in the United States were first patients, then students of Fr. Kneipp. Henry Lindlahr and Benedict Lust were both born in Germany, came to America, but returned to Europe to be healed by Fr. Kneipp - Lindlahr of diabetes and Lust of tuberculosis. Both men returned to the U.S. and began the work of introducing Kneipp's work here in the early 1900s. Each made some modifications, adding in more herbs, homeopathy and other modalities used in what is now naturopathic medicine. Getting closer to my line of study now, O.G. Carroll was cured of juvenile arthritis and rheumatic fever as a child by a doctor who had studied with Fr. Kneipp. He went on to study medicine and studied with Lindlahr and was a friend and professional colleague of Lust. He moved to Spokane where he had a private practice from 1908-1962. O.G. developed the system of constitutional hydrotherapy used today, as well as the testing system for food intolerances. After O.G. cured Harold Dick's brother and wife of allegedly incurable ulcers and rheumatoid arthritis, he went to naturopathic medical school and then studied with O.G. for three years. Dr. Harold Dick is the father of Dr. Letitia Dick-Kronenberg - my teacher and mentor of these last two months. Whew! But I couldn't get much closer to the horse's mouth, could I? What is Constitutional Hydrotherapy (CH)? Simply put, probably the most effective therapy for stimulating the immune system, enhancing metabolism and detoxifying the entire body! The basic treatment is a series of hot and cold towels applied to the chest, abdomen and back. CH can be individualized with physiotherapy, herbal medicine and homeopathy based on the immediate needs of the person. How Does It Work? Like many things that are abundant, water gets taken for granted. But it is a powerful substance in many ways. As a healing agent, the properties of water are highly stimulating to the body's healing abilities. In CH, the most important property of water is its ability to absorb and give off large amounts of heat. And heat has very specific actions on the body, its circulation and metabolism. In Boyle & Saine's book, Lectures in Naturopathic Hydrotherapy, they summarize it this way, "...heat, the therapeutic agent, is put into water, the vehicle, which is applied to the skin (the port-of-entry to the body); the nervous system responds to the thermic impressions and causes changes in the circulation of the blood and lymph which lead to changes at the cellular, tissue, organ and system levels of the body." There are many ways to use water in all its forms as therapy. We've all used an ice pack or steam sauna. These can be very effective for local, acute or other specific conditions. CH is different because it works on the whole body. The alternating hot and cold produces predictable effects in the body. Blood flow increases, first to the surface of the skin, then into the core of the body and its internal organs, then back to the surface. With the increase of oxygenated blood to all the tissues of the body, each cell can function more effectively - taking in the nutrients it needs and dumping the wastes it does not. Additionally, immune system function is significantly enhanced, increasing our ability to fight infections naturally. Studies done at Dr. Dick's clinic and at National College of Naturopathic Medicine showed an average increase of 10,000 white blood cells in circulation within six hours of just one treatment! CH builds up the blood, stimulates metabolism and regenerates health. Indications for CH. You name it! With its ability to stimulate immune function, CH is a great intervention for acute onset of all things infectious. In the last two months, I've used CH for children with ear infections, croup, and stomach aches and for adults with sinus infections, bronchitis and stomach flus. It is also very effective for acute conditions like migraines and menstrual cramps. I have watched people with all sorts of chronic issues - of the gut, female issues, joint pains, chemical sensitivities, malignancies, breathing trouble - improve over time. Cautions and Contraindications for CH. There are no real contraindications for CH - everyone can benefit. The intensity of the temperatures or length of treatment can be modified for those who are very debilitated. But there is a caution in that the treatment must be administered appropriately, as too much hot or cold can be counter-productive and even harmful in some cases. I am very pleased to be able to continue to offer this fabulous treatment in the Carroll tradition at the WellSpring office. |
