Each month this column will talk about the philosophy of naturopathic medicine in some way. The definition of The Vis will always stay up front for the benefit of our new readers. But, new information will be added below so don't miss out!
What is The Vis?

a) Latin word for power b) A foundation of naturopathic medicine c) Word rhyming with bees d) All of the above
The correct answer is d!
"The Vis" is, in naturopathic medical circles, short for the Latin, "Vis Medicatrix Naturae," which translates to the Healing Power of Nature. It is at the very core of naturopathic medicine and what sets it apart. The Vis is our body's own innate intelligence that strives every minute of every day to keep the body in a perfect balance of health and function.
* * * * * *You continue to hear that your Vis is alive and that it wants to be healthy and in balance. As I quoted Hahnemann last month, when we are in a state of health, things are running smoothly so that we can carry on with our life's higher purposes without the distraction of physical problems. So what happens when things don't seem to be running so smoothly? For a minute, think of your body like your house. Many activities take place in your house - some constructive, some destructive - but they all require energy and likely produce some waste materials. Say you're cooking dinner. That takes energy from you, creates a lovely, nutritious (of course!) meal, but also creates a pile of carrot peelings, brown lettuce ends, eggshells and a stack of dirty dishes and crumbs on the tablecloth. And so you then do the clean up bit. But what if you don't? Or only do part of the job? Say you have to run off to an evening meeting and just pile things up in the sink, get home late and add to the stack with the next day's breakfast dishes and then have an even bigger pile from the next dinner prep. Even if you do the regular clean up promptly, you know that sometimes you have to do that "deep" cleaning. How DO those dust bunnies, crumbs and bread bag ties get all the way under the oven? Where do all the crumbs and mystery goo on the refrigerator shelves and drawers come from? Ah, life's wonders, and all we know is that every once in awhile we have to haul everything out and clean up. Each of your cells is sorta like that. They take energy to do a job, creating whatever that cell is responsible for, and also creating waste products in the process. Under normal circumstances, our body is pretty good at doing the clean-up routine on a regular basis. But sometimes, if it gets overloaded with a larger than average burden, or if a larger problem presents to divert resources elsewhere in the body, then things can get piled up. Eventually this creates a barrier to the smooth flow of our normal working and the Vis has to take some drastic action to clean up. I am asking you to consider the possibility that this is actually why there will never be a "cure" for the common cold...because the common cold IS the cure! It is the drastic clean-up action taken by the body to throw off the gathered dust bunnies and goo built up in our daily lives. This drastic action shows up in us as what we generally call SYMPTOMS. Our mucous production increases to gather accumulated gunk and get it out of the body (stuffy then runny nose), aided by some force (coughing, sneezing). There might be a loss of appetite (digestion takes a lot of energy and the body wants to concentrate on cleaning out, not taking in), achiness (caused by cytokines and other proteins released by the immune system in its activation to help with the cleaning out), fever (a part of the immune system and possibly creating an inhospitable environment for some of the stuff that needs to be cleaned out). And these are all clear messages that we should rest, as the body does its best cleaning out & healing when we're sleeping and resting! Okay, if you've actually read this far, I'm assuming you are either willing to consider this possibility or you're entertained by the thought that I'm crazy and you want to see how much more confirmation I'll provide in that regard. But I hope you will actually consider it for a minute. Consider the range of cold medicines available over the counter. They suppress cold symptoms, but don't really do anything to speed up the healing. What if that's because there's nothing to heal? It's just time for a cleaning - and it takes as long as it takes. In fact, there is an argument that suppressing the "symptoms" may hinder the process. If a cold really is a cleaning out and the "symptoms" are the tools of cleaning, what happens if we take away the ShopVac and leave only the whisk broom? How much less efficient is this? When you have a cold, then, consider that it's a sign of your natural healing ability, your Vis, actually DOING something to improve your overall health, rather than feeling like it's letting you down. Consider how you can support rather than suppress this natural cleansing action. Consider building a helping relationship with your Vis.

To Ponder....
The greater danger for most of us lies not in
setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too
low, and achieving our mark.

Greetings!
Two thousand ten, two zero one zero, twenty ten - no matter how you decide to say it, welcome to the new year - 2010! A nice round number, isn't it? My mind goes...round, circle, whole & complete - just like our lives in every moment. And while January is notorious for intended new beginnings, remember that you are whole & complete already in this moment. And each moment - in January and throughout the year - is an opportunity to choose a different completeness. Moment-to-moment choices will add up to whatever your intention is for you in this New Year. Here's to that intention!

Notes & News
OFFICE HOUR CHANGE. Beginning January 11 and going through the first week of May, the WellSpring office will be closed Monday and Wednesday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. I will be teaching a class at CMU this semester that meets on M/W late afternoons. I will make every attempt to accommodate your appointment and medicinary needs at other times during the week.
WEBSITES OF INTEREST. It is entirely possible to get completely lost on the Web, with access to so much interesting, informative, entertaining stuff! I have links to several websites on the WellSpring website, but every so often I run across new ones and I thought I'd share some you might enjoy.
Open Congress allows you to follow what's happening in Congress, what our representatives are up to and what various bills are doing. You can just read or you can comment and it's free.
The Sleep Advisor is a sleep assessment tool developed by Dr. Rubin Naiman, a sleep specialist. On this website you can fill out a survey about your sleep habits and you'll receive a free analysis of possible trouble areas with your sleep. Be advised that you will also be offered the opportunity to purchase a guideline of recommendations, but it is not required. If you're having difficulty with sleep, the analysis alone may be enough to get you thinking about ways to improve your sleep.
Exercise is Medicine is the site for a new program of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) which, in cooperation with the America Medical Association, is suggesting that doctors use physical activity as a prescription for prevention and cure of various chronic disease!!! What a concept! There are assessment tools, getting started guidelines and other Tools for Success free for your use. If you want a little more assistance with your New Year exercise goals, ACSM has teamed with My Exercise Plan and is offering a 20% discount on a year's membership when you use the code ACSM20. (By the way, I have no financial stake in this program or the sleep one.)
At First 30 Days you can sign up to receive 30 days of encouragement through your email for almost any new habit that you're trying to develop. Many studies show that it takes about that length of time to really get a new pattern going. Maybe having a bright spot in your Inbox each day will help with that New Year's Resolution! (Thanks, Janet!)
SHARE NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE! YouTube can be a powerful tool these days. The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) has put together a number of videos that can be viewed there, discussing a number of topics related to naturopathic care. If you are interested, take a peek. But since you already get this newsletter, you know about naturopathy and it's sorta "preaching to the choir!" Maybe there are others in your acquaintance, however, that would benefit from some of this information. Consider passing them along! "Of the Month"
We'll start off the new year with a discussion of the 2nd of the B vitamins - Vitamin B2, or Riboflavin. Most of the B vitamins are essential for the business of metabolism of each cell of our body. They act as coenzymes in a number of biochemical pathways critical to our very survival. Riboflavin is among these important B vitamins. Vitamin B2 was likely first discovered in 1879, reported as a yellow pigment in milk called lactochrome. In the 1920s and 30s, many yellow and yellow-green pigments were being identified. In 1933 it was determined that these pigments were part of the vitamin B complex, and part of a large group of compounds called flavins. Riboflavin is a precursor to most of the biologically important flavins and was first synthesized in a lab in 1935. If you have had the experience of beginning to take a quality multi-vitamin that includes Vitamin B2, or a B-complex vitamin supplement, you probably also had the experience of noticing a change in the color of your urine. The bright yellow, sometimes greenish, almost fluorescent quality of your urine is the direct result of adding this pigment into your system. Completely harmless, but perhaps unsettling if you were not prepared! Functions of B2. Riboflavin functions as part of two coenzymes - FAD (flavin adenine dinucleotide) and FMN (riboflavin-5'-phosphate). FAD and FMN are critical to the running of the Krebs Cycle which (in a tiny nutshell) turns our food into usable energy - probably B2's biggest claim to fame. But its actions in a number of other reactions in the body are essential to that particular activity and we would function at a much lower of efficiency without riboflavin in these areas. These reactions include fatty acid metabolism, purine and choline catabolism, activation of folate and vitamin B6, neurotransmittter metabolism, sphingosine synthesis and the reduction of glutathione. (All these high-falutin' functions don't lessen the importance of the previously mentioned one of making you pee a pretty cool color!) Deficiency of B2. Riboflavin does not have a defined deficiency disease like some of the other vitamins. After prolonged inadequate intake, however, deficiency symptoms may include lesions on the corners of the mouth and outside of the lips, inflammation of the tongue, seborrheic dermatitis, problems with the cornea and peripheral neuropathy. Deficiency is rare in the United States and is most often associated with a deficiency in all the B vitamins. Interference of B2. Riboflavin is broken down and absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract, with the assistance of stomach acid. Severe disease of that area may adversely impact the absorption of riboflavin. Some drugs have been shown to increase excretion or decrease absorption of riboflavin. These include tetracylcine, thiazide diuretics and synthetic thyroid hormone. Oral contraceptives have been associated with a decrease in blood levels of B2. Sources of B2. Meat and dairy products are the most common sources of Vitamin B2 - with beef kidney being the highest - I'm sure that's on all of your weekly menus! Legumes are also a good source and most fruits and vegetables have some riboflavin. Some people believe that animal sources are better absorbed than plant sources. Recommended Amounts and Toxicity. The RDA for Vitamin B2 is just over 1 mg per day. Most NDs would recommend 5-15 mg per day. There is no known toxicity with higher doses of riboflavin. Therapeutic Uses. Remember that except in special circumstances, supplementing the B vitamins is best done together as a B-Complex, rather than singly. However, riboflavin may have therapeutic uses in higher doses for migraines, rosacea, cataracts and depression. Consult with a qualified health care provider if you have further questions about the use of Vitamin B2. |
