Emerging Regulatory Developments for Chromium Plating Processes and Perfluorinated Mist Suppressants

Federal and state regulatory agencies continue to push more stringent controls and restrictions on chromium plating processes and the use of perfluorinated mist suppresants in the surface finishing industry. This webinar will provide the latest developments on the following critical issues from national experts:

  • EPA's residual risk and technology review proposed rulemaking to impose more stringent air emission controls for the Chromium Electroplating MACT standard, expected August, 2010
  • Increasing regulatory pressures to restrict or ban the use of perfluorinated mist suppressants for plating processes
  • The NASF efforts with EPA headquarters, EPA Region V and the State of Minnesota to assess the use, potential impact and possible control options or restrictions for perfluorinated mist suppressants
  • How the use of perfluorinated mist suppressants may impact biosolids from POTWs
  • The Department of Defense's proposed policy to restrict the use of hexavalent chromium

AESF Foundation
Chromium Plating Course

The AESF Foundation is pleased to offer this course in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from October 21 - 22, with the optional exam being held on October 23. Download the registration form here. This two-day course is intended for training of personnel working in "hard chrome" plating shops.  It has specific benefit for line workers and shop foremen, but can also be of great use to shop owners and managers of hard chromium plating facilities.

While it is not necessary to take any AESF course to be eligible to sit for the respective exam that could lead you to becoming a Master Surface Finisher (MSF), this course covers one of the core curriculum areas for qualifying to obtain MSF certification.

The course is particularly useful to job shops, aerospace and airline plating operations. A background in both chemistry and metallurgy is provided, so that the students can better understand the problems involved in plating chromium onto a wide variety of substrates. Detailed information is provided on analytical control of the plating solutions, preparation, masking and polishing operations.  Clean Air Act compliance information is also covered, along with equipment design, including scrubbers and mesh pad systems.

Additional subjects to be covered include:

Hydrogen embrittlement

Cleaning/reverse etching

Principles of chromium plating

Post-plate finishing

Purifying plating solutions

Reversible rack plating

Wastewater treatment

Troubleshooting

Analysis of plating solutions

Equipment & equipment maintenance

Design of scrubbing/ventilation system

Surface preparation, grinding, polishing, shotpeening and repair of damaged areas
