Plating & Polishing Rule: Compliance Webinar
Join the NASF Plating & Polishing Rule Webinars in April & May 2010!

Will You Be Compliant with the Plating & Polishing Rule? Did You Know the Deadline is July 1, 2010? While NASF has sent out initial notification and compliance guidance to prepare for the EPA Plating & Polishing rule deadline, many NASF members tell us they still have questions.  Guess no more...NASF will be kicking off a major education effort on the rule via webinar, with one in April and one in May 2010.  Key dates will be broadcast shortly.

Most will recall that NASF efforts ensured that the rule, finalized in 2008, contained no final emission standards for nickel and other processes.  The industry's sound education effort with the agency on technical and science issues convinced the agency to develop a more flexible framework of management practices and retreat from a more aggressive regulatory posture.

Now that the compliance deadline is on the horizon, there are still a few issues that finishing operations may need to be mindful of to avoid both minor and major problems ahead.

Watch for dates to be published in next week's NASF Washington Report!
Minnesota Finishers Issues Nationwide Challenge, Contributes $5,000 to NASF Government Relations Fund

The Minnesota Association of Metal Finishers in April presented NASF HQ with a contribution of $5,000.00 to rebuild the NASF Government Relations Fund in 2010.  Minnesota Finishers also issued a challenge to all local NASF organizations to match or exceed their contribution in order to strengthen the NASF's advocacy and education effort.  Christian Richter, who met with the group on developing a "Sustainable Technology Initiative" with USEPA on fume suppressants, accepted the contribution and thanked the Minnesota affiliate and its members for their proactive work with their regulators on a range of key industry issues.
Presenting the check to NASF (Christian Richter) are from left to right Keith Anderson, President of the Minnesota Association fo Metal Finishers (MnAmF), Roger Plath, MnMAMF National Director, and Diane Dorshner MnAMF Vice President.

NASF Talks Perfluorinated Chemicals in Minnesota

NASF HQ was in the Twin Cities earlier this month to meet with the Minnesota Association of Metal Finishers (MNAMF) to discuss the latest developments in Minnesota on fume suppressants for chromium-based finishing processes.  The Minnesota finishing community also invited Leo Hermes, the industrial wastewater manager at the Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES).

In light of new concerns from the nation's municipal wastewater treatment operators over perfluorinated chemicals used in the finishing industry, NASF Executive Vice President Christian Richter updated the industry on recent discussions with USEPA Region 5 and the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (www.nacwa.org).  He also invited Mr. Hermes to have the MCES support the finishing industry's effort to voluntarily accelerate the transition to alternative fume suppressants.
