Steve & Julie

Earth Day is being celebrated in Bend with a parade and fair on Saturday, April 23.  The parade will begin at 11am in front of McMenamins on Bond Street and continue through downtown.  The Earth Day Fair will be on Kansas Avenue in front of the Environmental Center.

The goal of Earth Day is to provide education and information for people to learn more about what is being done and what can be done to ensure a healthy and sustainable evironment for the future.

Which of the Billion Acts of Green will you consider?  For example, Hansmann & Sons always recycles applicable building products.

What is it all about?

Earth Day, Green Living,..... These phrases may becoming so common that you hardly concern yourself with what they mean to you. Or they are used in contexts that have you believing they apply to someone else - the builder or the gardner.

The basic concept is that if we all take even little steps to care for our planet it can have a tremendous impact on the future.

Composting isn't for everyone.

Clotheslines may be prohibited in your neighborhood.

And you may feel like you will never get the kids to turn off the lights and appliances when they leave the room!

Don't let it deter you from making a difference when you can.  Put the junk mail in the recycle instead of the garbage can.  Instead of throwing away old clothes or shoes, donate them.  Drive less, bike more.  Remember your reusable grocery bags.

Best of all... get outdoors and simply enjoy what is already here in nature.  Listen to the birds, the river, the wind.  Watch the clouds, the wildlife, the plants beginning to bud.  Appreciate what we have right outside our doors.

Energy Star Appliance Rebates

Purchase a new Energy Star appliance and you may qualify for a voucher for up to a 70% rebate.  For example, you could receive up to $800 for a washing machine or $2000 for a heat pump.

The program, made possible through federal stimulus funds, has been so popular that they may run out of vouchers by this summer.

The specific requirements can be found on the Oregon Department of Energy website.  In general, the homeowner must meet certain income requirements and recycle the old appliance.

Just one more way to encourage "Green Living'!
