NOVEMBER 2010
Happy Thanksgiving

Greetings!

Julie & Steve
The most familiar story of the first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth Colony, in present-day Massachusetts, in 1621. More than 200 years later, President Lincoln declared the final Thursday in November as a national day of thanksgiving. Congress made Thanksgiving Day an official national holiday in 1941.

But, did you know that Cranberry production in the U.S. was approximately 709 million pounds in 2009 with Oregon being one of the top cranberry growing states?  Or, that the first broadcast of a Thanksgiving NFL game, Lions v. Bears, was in 1934?

Tax Credit for Efficiency Upgrades
Home owners should act soon if they want to qualify for up to $1,500 in tax credits for efficiency upgrades when they complete their 2010 income tax returns.  Although it would be a great benefit to both the environment and to our economy to extend these tax benefits, they are scheduled to expire at the end of the year.  Thus, NAHB suggests that home owners get the work done before Dec. 31, while the tax credits are still available.

The tax credit for efficiency upgrades in existing homes (Internal Revenue Code Section 25C) is available for 30 percent of the cost, up to a $1,500 limit for 2009 and 2010, for the installation of certain types of insulation, windows, roofs, water heaters, heat pumps, air conditioners and furnaces. Details on the kinds of products that qualify and instructions for obtaining the credit are available at www.nahb.org/efficiencytaxcredit.

Central Oregon Reuse/Recycle Guide

The first Reuse/Recycle Guide for residents, builders and contractors throughout Central Oregon is now available! This guide is a collaborative effort between the Community Affairs Committee of the Central Oregon Building Green Council and the Central Oregon Environmental Center.  Limited production of hard copies of this guide was intentional to encourage the use of the paper-free, downloadable version that is available online from this link. Here are just a few tips from the guide:

Computers - Effective January 1st 2009, anyone bringing seven or fewer computers, monitors and TVs at a time may recycle their electronics at no charge at participating collection sites, such as Deschutes County Knott Landfill Negus Transfer station, Goodwill stores throughout Central Oregon, and St. Vincent DePaul.

Household batteries - Alkaline batteries are disposable in your household garbage, but batteries containing mercury such as button cells, Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd) or Lithium Ion (Li-ion) should be taken to the Hazardous Waste area at your nearest collection facility for recycling.
